Cut‐Off Lows (COLs) in the Southern Hemisphere and the mechanisms involved in their development are investigated in detail using the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) budget applied to data from the ERA‐Interim reanalysis. This approach considers the most important processes that are typical for the evolution of midlatitude disturbances such as the baroclinic (BRC) and barotropic (BRT) conversions, and the ageostrophic flux convergence (AFC), known as downstream development. Composites of the volume‐integrated EKE and its components are evaluated based on the 200 most intense SH COLs (>98th percentile) observed in a 36‐year period. Results show that the AFC together with the BRC conversion are the most important contributors to the EKE growth for the COLs, characterizing the downstream baroclinic development. The AFC plays an important role in genesis and intensification phases of the COLs, while the BRC conversion is important for the system maintenance. The dissipation of the COLs occurs due to dispersive fluxes (ageostrophic flux divergence) together with other processes not directly computed in the EKE equation, such as friction and latent heat release which are problematic in reanalysis datasets. The BRT conversion contributes negatively to the COL development by transferring EKE to the zonal flow kinetic energy, though this is not enough to dampen the intensification. Regional differences were found in the energetics, indicating that COLs originating upstream of the continents are clearly dominated by ageostrophic fluxes, while the systems over the Australian region are mostly driven by baroclinic processes.

Neste trabalho foi feita uma classificação sinótica de sequência de campos de pressão ao nível médio do mar (PNMM) e de altura geopotencial em 500 hPa, associado à ocorrência de precipitação intensa na cidade do Rio de Janeiro - RJ. Para obter os Padrões de Sequência Principal (PSP) da PNMM foi utilizada a metodologia de Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP) rotacionadas. Os resultados mostram três tipos de padrões sinóticos que causaram eventos extremos de chuva na cidade do Rio de Janeiro durante o período de 1997-2010, que representam aproximadamente 56% da variância total dos casos. O padrão dominante mostra a passagem de frentes frias com trajetória predominantemente zonal. Já o segundo padrão está relacionado ao ingresso de frentes frias clássicas, acompanhadas de intensos anticiclones pós-frontais. Por último, observa-se um padrão relacionado ao posicionamento de um anticiclone à leste do Rio Grande do Sul, que gera ventos de quadrante sul no Rio de Janeiro.

Cold fronts are the most frequent synoptic systems that affect Southeast Brazil during the whole year. The highest frequency of these systems at these latitudes occurs in the months of spring (SON) and winter (JJA), but the highest associated precipitation occurs in the spring (SON) and summer (DJF). Some of these fronts present light rains but others cause heavy precipitation, giving rise to flooding and landslides, mainly in the summer. Composites of the two cases (light and heavy rainfall) are analysed for the summer season. Large‐scale and regional features are shown to discuss the differences in precipitation. Regional differences are seen in the position and intensity of low pressure and postfrontal high. The differences are also associated with the humidity flux and convergence over the region. The main difference at high levels is the position of the frontal trough, which is close to the region in the wet cases and displaced to the ocean in the dry cases. Features of the Southern Annular Mode and Madden–Julian Oscillation show opposite patterns in the two cases. These modes of variability can modulate extra‐tropical wave trains over the Pacific, which have different behaviour downstream, over South America and South Atlantic Ocean. The eddy kinetic energy is stronger over Southeastern Pacific and Southern South America, and wave activity shows energy propagation towards the continent in the wet cases. Similar analyses with results of a global atmospheric model show that the general atmospheric characteristics of a frontal system are reproduced, as the temperature gradient, the wind confluence and the ridge‐trough pair associated with the frontal system. The model represents the differences with respect to moisture flux and the frontal trough position, but underestimates the moisture convergence, eddy kinetic energy and wave activity, in the wet cases.

Resumo O trabalho apresenta uma classificação sinótica de frentes frias sobre o leste do Estado de Santa Catarina (SC), com o propósito de identificar os principais padrões sinóticos associados com chuvas extremas na região do Vale do Itajaí. A metodologia utilizada foi a técnica de Análise de Componentes Principais aplicada à série de reanálises do Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) (NCEP) para o período 1979-2010. Previamente, realiza-se uma climatologia de frentes frias sobre o leste de SC, cujos resultados mostram uma maior frequência de frentes frias associadas a chuvas extremas no Vale do Itajaí durante a primavera. Os resultados fornecem cinco padrões sinóticos principais que representam 83,4% dos casos de frentes frias com chuvas extremas no Vale do Itajaí. O padrão sinótico mais frequente mostra um intenso fluxo de quadrante sudeste sobre a região de estudo, determinado pela presença de um forte anticiclone pós-frontal observado sobre o sul da Província de Buenos Aires, cuja frente fria associada encontra-se no extremo nordeste catarinense. Por último, há dois padrões sinóticos típicos de verão relacionados com chuvas extremas no Vale do Itajaí; um relacionado com episódios de Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS) e outro associado com a Baixa do Chaco (BCH).

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer uma análise sinótica e verificar a destreza de modelos numéricos operacionais (ETA15km, BRAMS20km e GFS) para um caso de chuva intensa em parte do litoral de São Paulo e do Rio de Janeiro, Baixada Fluminense e Região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro entre os dias 17 e 18/03/2013. Em algumas localidades a precipitação acumulada em 24 horas excedeu 100 mm, com máximo de 424,5 na cidade de Petrópolis. Foi usada uma ferramenta para a obtenção de padrões sinóticos ocorridos no passado semelhante ao evento extremo analisado. As fortes chuvas foram ocasionadas pela presença de uma frente fria associada aos ventos mais intensos em baixos níveis, favorecendo a advecção de umidade do oceano para o continente. Os modelos numéricos regionais representaram de forma qualitativamente adequada a chuva intensa na região atingida. Porém, a intensidade e a localização das chuvas intensas ainda é um desafio para a modelagem numérica.

Este estudo discute a viabilidade de se empregar uma ferramenta objetiva para previsão de tempo severo em ambiente operacional, com o propósito principal de auxiliar a rotina do meteorologista previsor. O método baseia-se na combinação de parâmetros convectivos amplamente conhecidos na literatura, como os índices de instabilidade K, Total Totals e SWEAT. Para ajudar a identificação rápida das áreas com alto potencial para gerar tempestades foram produzidas cartas de visualização, definidas a partir de critérios específicos para convecção severa. Uma alternativa para detectar áreas favoráveis à ocorrência de granizo também foi apresentada, essencialmente para aqueles eventos originados pela ação de mecanismos dinâmicos. Os limiares mostraram-se importantes para caracterização do tipo de precipitação, permitindo através deles estabelecer diferentes padrões convectivos. Os resultados mostraram que a ferramenta proposta pode representar uma alternativa eficiente para a previsão de tempo na América do Sul, permitindo em alguns casos suprir limitações corriqueiras dos modelos numéricos, principalmente no que se refere à variável precipitação.

PALAVRAS CHAVE: frentes frias, extremos de chuva, Região Serrana de Rio de Janeiro CHARACTERISTIS OF COLD FRONTS WITH POTENTIAL TO CAUSE HEAVY RAINFALL OVER THE MONTAINOUS REGION OF RIO DE JANEIRO ABSTRACT:The mountainous region of the Rio de Janeiro State is particularly exposed to natural disasters due to its topography, climatology and disorderly demographic occupation. Most of the annual rainfall in this region is explained by cold fronts passages. This article perform a characterization of cold fronts responsible for the highest daily rainfall volumes. Frontal situations were chosen using an objective criteria applied to CFSR analysis during the period 1998-2010. Precipitation data include local rain gauges data and remote sensing estimations. Fronts causing major daily precipitation occur during the warmer period of the year. During this season they differ from systems causing rainfall lower than 5.0mm/day even two days in advance, when the cold fronts locate over Uruguay. Initially, the existence of a relatively barotropic wave on the Atlantic Ocean prolongs the warm and moist air advection from the north-west to the southern Brazil. The subsequent coupling of this disturbance with a shorter and more baroclinic wave cause a faster frontal displacement, as well as its intensification in terms of temperature contrast, vorticity advection and upper levels divergence. These factors, combined with a highly humid and warm prefrontal air mass, explain the occurrence of more massive rains.
