Topological insulators (TIs) are a new type of electronic materials in which the nontrivial insulating bulk band topology governs conducting boundary states with embedded spin-momentum locking. Such edge states are more robust in a two-dimensional (2D) TI against scattering by nonmagnetic impurities than in its three-dimensional (3D) variant, because in 2D the two helical edge states are protected from the only possible backscattering. This makes the 2D TI family a better candidate for coherent spin transport and related applications. While several 3D TIs are already synthesized experimentally, physical realization of 2D TI is so far limited to hybrid quantum wells with a tiny bandgap that does not survive temperatures above 10 K. Here, combining first-principles calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) experimental studies, we report nontrivial 2D TI phases in 2-monolayer (2-ML) and 4-ML Bi(110) films with large and tunable bandgaps determined by atomic buckling of Bi(110) films. The gapless edge states are experimentally detected within the insulating bulk gap at 77 K. The band topology of ultrathin Bi(110) films is sensitive to atomic buckling. Such buckling is sensitive to charge doping and could be controlled by choosing different substrates on which Bi(110) films are grown.

The biocompatibility, controllable size and crystal structure and surface functionalization ability of TNTs accelerate its efficient development in biomedical applications including implants and biosensors.

Coherently adding up signal wave from different locations are a prerequisite for realizing efficient nonlinear optical processes in traditional optical configurations. While nonlinear optical processes in plasmonic waveguides with subwavelength light confinement are in principle desirable for enhancing nonlinear effects, so far it has been difficult to improve the efficiency due to the large momentum mismatch. Here we demonstrate, using remotely excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), axial collimated but transversely divergent second harmonic (SH) generation in a single silver nanowire-monolayer molybdenum disulfide hybrid system. Fourier imaging of the generated SH signal confirms the momentum conservation conditions between the incident and reflected SPPs and reveals distinct features inherent to the 1D plasmonic waveguides: (i) the SH photons are collimated perpendicular to the nanowire axis but are divergent within the perpendicular plane; (ii) the collimation (divergence) is inversely proportional to the length of the active region (lateral confinement of the SPPs); and (iii) the SH emission pattern resembles that of an aligned dipole chain on top of the substrate with an emission peak at the critical angle. Our results pave the way to generate and manipulate SH emission around subwavelength waveguides and open up new possibilities for realizing high efficiency on-chip nonlinear optics.

The relatively poor dynamic response of current flexible strain gauges has prevented their wide adoption in portable electronics. In this work, we present a greatly improved flexible strain gauge, where one strip of Au nanoparticle (NP) monolayer assembled on a polyethylene terephthalate film is utilized as the active unit. The proposed flexible gauge is capable of responding to applied stimuli without detectable hysteresis via electron tunneling between adjacent nanoparticles within the Au NP monolayer. Based on experimental quantification of the time and frequency domain dependence of the electrical resistance of the proposed strain gauge, acoustic vibrations in the frequency range of 1 to 20,000 Hz could be reliably detected. In addition to being used to measure musical tone, audible speech, and creature vocalization, as demonstrated in this study, the ultrafast dynamic response of this flexible strain gauge can be used in a wide range of applications, including miniaturized vibratory sensors, safe entrance guard management systems, and ultrasensitive pressure sensors.

Maresin 1 (MaR 1) was recently reported to have protective properties in several different animal models of acute inflammation by inhibiting inflammatory response. However, its function in acute liver injury is still unknown. To address this question, we induced liver injury in BALB/c mice with intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride with or without treatment of MaR 1. Our data showed that MaR 1 attenuated hepatic injury, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation induced by carbon tetrachloride, as evidenced by increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and reactive oxygen species levels were inhibited by treatment of MaR 1. Furthermore, MaR 1 increased activities of antioxidative mediators in carbon tetrachloride-treated mice liver. MaR 1 decreased indices of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, interleukin-1β, monocyte chemotactic protein 1, myeloperoxidase, cyclooxygenase-2, and inducible nitric oxide synthase. Administration of MaR 1 inhibited activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κb) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in the liver of CCl4 treated mice. In conclusion, these results suggested the antioxidative, anti-inflammatory properties of MaR 1 in CCl4 induced liver injury. The possible mechanism is partly implicated in its abilities to inhibit ROS generation and activation of NF-κb and MAPK pathway.
