A digital photo frame (DPF) has evolved from a tool for displaying favorite photographs to a device that displays videos. The next advancement is the introduction of the stereoscopic display. Although a DPF with a stereoscopic display has already been released on the market, it only enables horizontal parallax. In this paper, we describe a different type of 3D display system based on a DPF and a fly's eye lens, both of which are commercially available. Our system enables not only horizontal but also vertical parallax because integral photography (IP) is used. IP was thought to be a technology of the future because a very high resolution LCD and a dedicated fly's eye lens were believed to be necessary. However, the extended fractional view (EFV) method[1] proposed by one of the authors enabled freely combining a wide range of LCDs and the relatively inexpensive fly's eye lenses available on the market to produce IP. It greatly contributed to the initial cost reduction. This new system uses the EFV method. The main problem is how to supply good content. Therefore, we also developed a method of producing the animation of IP by using CG technology.

A new 3D display system based on integral imaging technology was developed by combining two methods. One is the extended fractional view method in which various LCDs and fly's eye lenses can be used together, and the other is the slanted lens array method that can reduce the moiré pattern.

A new moving integral imaging system was developed. 3D CG animation data are rendered from multiple viewpoints and integrated into a video sequence with our method. The sequence is displayed on a laptop LCD and observed through a generalpurpose fly's eye lens. A stereoscopic view with full parallax was obtained.

This paper describes MPEG2 video and audio CODER and DECODER boards and a set of dedi cated CODEC chips which are the key components of these boards. MPEG2 is the internat.ional standard for moving picture coding algorithms and is expected to be applied t.o various fields because of its high image quality. The design policy has been decided based on intensive investigations of potential applications and popularization of video com munication. From this view point, it is very efficient and important to implement an MPEG2 CODEC system on a personal computer (PC) platform. Since a short delay is particularly important for real-time applications such as teleconferencing, SP@ML has been adopted. In this case, the number of coding operations is reduced, but our simula tion results show that the picture quality is almost same as that of MP@ML. Non-real-time operation is also made pos sible so that application to interactive editing of video se quences can be achieved. Moreover, a considerable amount of processing is reduced by a hierarchical search algorithm. A nonlinear pre-filter is used to remove the noise included in the input video signal. Our prototype boards have been designed as PC/AT extension boards. The typical frame size is 720x480 pixels, and its rate is 30 frame per sec ond. The maximum bit rate of the compressed data is 15 Mbit/sec.
