In order to search for an efficient counter electrode in a dye-sensitized solar cells, three kinds of nano-carbon materials were examined. When single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were used as a carbon electrode, the conversion efficiency of the cells is 4.5%. This value is comparable to Grätzel-type dye-sensitized solar cell (counter electrode: platiun-suputtered fluorine-doped tin oxide) under the same experimental condition.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether hesperidin inhibits bone loss in ovariectomized mice (OVX), an animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Forty 8-wk-old female ddY mice were assigned to five groups: a sham-operated group fed the control diet (AIN-93G), an OVX group fed the control diet, an OVX+HesA group fed the control diet containing 0.5 g/100 g hesperidin, and an OVX+HesB group fed the control diet containing 0.7 g/100 g alpha-glucosylhesperidin and an OVX+17beta-estradiol (E(2)) group fed the control diet and administered 0.03 micro g E(2)/d with a mini-osmotic pump. After 4 wk, the mice were killed and blood, femoral, uterine and liver were sampled immediately. Hesperidin administration did not affect the uterine weight. In OVX mice, the bone mineral density of the femur was lower than in the sham group (P < 0.05) and this bone loss was significantly prevented by dietary hesperidin or alpha-glucosylhesperidin. The Ca, P and Zn concentrations in the femur were significantly higher in the hesperidin-fed and E(2) groups than in the OVX group. Histomorphometric analyses showed that the trabecular bone volume and trabecular thickness in the femoral distal metaphysis were markedly decreased (P < 0.05) by OVX, and alpha-glucosylhesperidin significantly prevented this bone loss. Furthermore, hesperidin decreased the osteoclast number of the femoral metaphysis in OVX mice, as did E(2). Serum and hepatic lipids were lower in mice that consumed the hesperidin-containing diets (P < 0.05) than in the OVX group fed the control diet. These results suggest a possible role for citrus flavonoids in the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases because of their beneficial effects on bone and lipids.

Summary Medicinal plants constitute an important source of potential therapeutic agents for diabetes. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Moringa oleifera (MO) Lam, Moringacea, on glucose tolerance in Wistar rats and Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, modeled type 2 diabetes. Major polyphenols in MO powder were quercetin glucosides, rutin, kaempferol glycosides and chlorogenic acids by HPLC analysis. As the results of glucose tolerance test, MO significantly decreased the blood glucose at 20, 30, 45and 60 min for GK rats and at 10, 30 and 45 min for Wistar rats (p<0.05) compared to the both controls after glucose administration. The area under the curve of changes in the blood glucose was significantly higher in the GK control group than in the GK plus MO group (p<0.05) in the periods 30-60 min and 60-120 min. Furthermore, MO significantly decreased stomach emptying in GK rats (p<0.05). The results indicated that MO has an ameliorating effect for glucose intolerance, and the effect might be mediated by quercetin-3-glucoside and fiber contents in MO leaf powder. The action of MO was greater in GK rats than in Wistar rats.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the manner in which dietary iron deficiency decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in rats. Eighteen 3-wk-old male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups of 6 rats each. The rats in 2 of the 3 groups had free access to a control diet (C group) or an iron-deficient diet (ID group) for 4 wk. The rats in the third group (PF group) were pair-fed the control diet to the mean intake of the ID group. Compared with the C and PF groups, hematocrit and hemoglobin concentrations were significantly reduced and bone mineral content and BMD of the femur were significantly lower in the ID group. Bone histomorphometric parameters showed that the bone formation rate and osteoclast surface in the lumbar vertebra were significantly reduced in the ID group compared with the C and PF groups. Furthermore, dietary iron deficiency decreased serum 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, insulin-like growth factor-I, and osteocalcin concentrations and urinary excretion of deoxypyridinoline. These results suggest that severe iron deficiency decreases not only bone formation but also bone resorption.

Soybean isoflavones have structures similar to that of estrogen and have received attention as alternatives to hormone replacement therapy for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Daidzein, a major isoflavone found in soybean, is metabolized to equol by gut microflora, and the metabolite exhibits a stronger estrogenic activity than daidzein. However, there is no direct evidence that equol affects bone metabolism. In this study, we examined the effect of equol on the inhibition of bone loss in ovariectomized (OVX) mice. Female mice (8 wk old) were assigned to 5 groups as follows: sham-operated (sham), OVX, OVX + 0.1 mg/d equol administration (0.1 Eq), OVX + 0.5 mg/d equol administration (0.5 Eq), and OVX + 0.03 microg/d 17beta-estradiol administration (E(2)). Equol and E(2) were administered s.c., using a mini-osmotic pump. At 4 wk after the intervention, uterine weight was less in the OVX mice than in sham-operated mice (P < 0.05). The weight was maintained in the E(2) group. In contrast, administration of equol at doses used in this study did not affect uterine atrophy in OVX mice. Bone mineral density (BMD) for the whole body in the OVX group measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was lower than that in the sham group, whereas administration of 0.5 mg/d Eq as well as E(2) maintained the BMD. The BMD of the femur and lumbar spine in the OVX group was also lower than those in the sham group, and treatment with 0.5 mg/d Eq maintained it. Notably, the BMD of the proximal femur in the 0.5 Eq group was the same as that of the sham group. E(2) inhibited bone loss from all regions induced by OVX. These results suggest that equol, a major metabolite of daidzein, inhibits bone loss apparently without estrogenic activity in the reproductive organs of OVX mice.

Here, the fabrication of quasi‐solid‐state TiO2/dye/poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) solar cells is reported, in which the dyes with oleophilic thienyl groups were employed and ionic liquid (IL), 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium (EMIm) containing lithium bis(trifluromethanesulfone)amide (Li‐TFSI) and 4‐tert‐butylpyridine (t‐BP) are assembled with dyed TiO2 surfaces. One of the devices gave a high conversion efficiency of up to 2.70% under 1 sun illumination. The excellent performance is ascribed to successful molecular self‐organization at interface of the dye molecules and P3HT, and to the efficient charge separation and diffusion acquired by introduction of the IL coupled with Li‐TFSI and t‐BP.

Citrus bioflavonoids may offer some protection against the early stage of diabetes mellitus and the development of complications. We investigated the effect of hesperidin on blood glucose levels, hepatic glucose-regulating enzyme activities, serum insulin and adiponectin levels, serum and hepatic lipid levels, and parameters of bone loss in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced marginal type 1 diabetic rats. Weanling male rats were randomly assigned to experimental 3 groups: a control (C) group, a STZ induced marginal type 1 diabetes (S) group, and a diabetes and hesperidin group, and fed their respective diets for 4 weeks. STZ injection increased blood glucose in rats, but the increase was marginal. Serum and hepatic lipids, serum adiponectin and insulin levels were significantly changed by STZ injection. Dietary hesperidin (10 g/kg diet) decreased blood glucose by altering the activity of glucose-regulating enzymes, and normalized the lipids and adiponectin levels, but did not change bone parameters in the marginal type 1 diabetic rats. Hesperidin showed both hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects but did not affect bone tissue and bone metabolic makers in STZ-injected marginal diabetic weanling rats without any body weight loss due to STZ injection.

The effects of the dietary Ca and P ratio, independent of any vitamin D effects, on bone mineralization and turnover was examined in 60 VDRKO mice fed different Ca/P ratio diets. High dietary Ca/P ratio promoted bone mineralization and turnover with adequate intestinal Ca and P transports in VDRKO mice. Introduction:To clarify the effects of the dietary calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) ratio (Ca/P ratio) on bone mineralization and turnover in null-vitamin D signal condition, vitamin D receptor knockout (VDRKO) mice were given diets containing different Ca/P ratios. Materials and Methods: Five groups of 4-week-old VDRKO mice, 10 animals each, were fed diets for 4 weeks. Group 1 was wild-type littermate mice, fed the diet containing 0.5% Ca and P (Ca/P ϭ 1). Group 2 was the control and was fed a similar diet (Ca/P ϭ 1). Groups 3, 4, 5, and 6 were fed the following diets:0.5% Ca and 1.0% P (Ca/P ϭ 0.5), 1.0% Ca and 1.0% P (Ca/P ϭ 1), 1.0% Ca and 0.5% P (Ca/P ϭ 2), and 0.5% Ca and 0.25% P (Ca/P ϭ 2). Results and Conclusions: Compared with group 2, serum calcium and phosphorus levels in groups 4 -6 significantly increased. Serum parathyroid hormone levels increased in group 3 and decreased in group 5. The amounts of intestinal calcium absorption decreased in groups 3 and 4. Phosphorus absorption increased in group 3 and decreased in groups 4 -6. Bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) of the femur in group 3 significantly decreased and increased in group 5. In the primary spongiosa of the proximal tibia, the trabecular bone volume (BV/TV) and osteoid thickness (O.Th) in group 3 significantly increased, and decreased in group 6. In groups 5 and 6, the numbers of the trabecular osteoclasts increased. In groups 2 and 4, and the secondary spongiosa was identified in 5 of 10 mice. In group 3, there was no secondary spongiosa in either mouse. Osteoid maturation time (OMT) significantly decreased, and bone formation rate (BFR/BS) increased in groups 4 -6. These data indicate that the dietary Ca/P ratio regulates bone mineralization and turnover by affecting the intestinal calcium and phosphorus transports in VDRKO mice. They may suggest the existence of Ca/P ratio-dependent, vitamin D-independent calcium and phosphorus transport system in the intestine.
