Abstract: Abortion as an illegal practice is referred to as a public health issue due to its relationship with the high rate of maternal morbidity and mortality. Child abandonment is an alarming social problem that impacts the individual's psychological and social development. This review aims to discuss the relationship between illegal abortion and child abandonment in Brazil. A narrative review of the literature was carried out in the VHL database, selecting articles indexed in MEDLINE and LILACs and theses, based on the keywords "Abortion", "Brazil", "Public health" and "Child abandonment". The axes of discussion were defined according to the work “Homeland that gave birth to me (Pátria que me pariu)”, by the poet Gabriel O Pensador. Abortion as an illegal practice is referred to as a public health issue, given its relationship with the high rate of maternal morbidity and mortality. The social repercussions of this paradigm became evident in children who survived maternal abortion to be, subsequently, aborted by the Brazilian State, being considered as the most recurrent victims of the criminalization process. It is estimated that, in Brazil, one in five women aged 40 has already induced an abortion. The historical persistence of this health problem is evident, reflecting a discussion that essentially brings together men who are contrary to public health policies for women, proposing projects focused on the perpetuation of biblical and patriarchal principles. Keywords: Abortion; Child abandonment; Public health.
