Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a new clinical procedure used to insert an aortic valve percutaneously where conventional cardiac surgery would be deemed too high risk. When this procedure was introduced into the cardiac centre it was recognized that nursing practice would need to be developed for this new area of care. To address this a nursing care pathway was developed, spanning pre-procedure care, care in the cardiac catheter laboratory, post-procedure care and cardiac rehabilitation. In addition a patient information booklet was developed to provide patients with the necessary information in a consistent way. The development of this nursing practice will be discussed.
were 9.5% and in 2008 9.05%. This apparent increase is probably due to improved documentation especially for the haematomas. Conclusion: The data for 2009 needs to be analysed to see if the trend remains constant or if some improvement has been obtained. More accurate documention of complications can result in an initial "raise" in the numbers and more data needs to be collected before a definite conclusion can be made.
