RESUMOCom o intuito de caracterizar e diagnosticar o estuário do rio Una através da análise da comunidade fitoplanctônica e dos parâmetros ambientais se desenvolveu esta pesquisa. As amostras foram coletadas, em sua maioria, na superfície com garrafa de Nansen, em três pontos fixos, durante a baixa-mar e preamar diurna, em maré de sizígia. ABSTRACTThe present work was performed in the estuary of the Una River, located in the south coast of the Pernambuco State (Brazil), at 130km of the Recife City. The objective of this work was to characterize and to diagnosis the cited ecosystem through the phytoplankton community and the hydrological parameters. The water samples had been collected in the surface through Nansen bottles, at three fixed stations during the low and high tide. The total rain was 1,319.5mm; the water transparency varied from 0.20 to 2.25m; the temperature from 23.8 to 32°C; the salinity from 0 to 39‰; the oxygen saturation rate from 74.8 to 132.4%; the pH from 7.07 to 8.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as variações espaço-temporal do microfitoplâncton e variáveis ambientais no estuário do rio Formoso, litoral sul do estado de Pernambuco. As coletas ocorreram em três pontos, no período chuvoso (maio a julho/2002) e estiagem (outubro a dezembro/2002). As amostras do plâncton foram obtidas através de arrastos horizontais superficiais, com rede de abertura de malha de 64¼m. Foram registrados in situ dados sobre temperatura e transparência e, concomitantemente, coletadas amostras de água utilizando a garrafa tipo Kitahara para a análise de salinidade, pH, oxigênio dissolvido, sais nutrientes e biomassa. Foram identificados 204 táxons predominando o grupo das diatomáceas (75%), destacando-se como dominantes Chaetoceros costatus Pavillard, Chaetoceros curvisetus Cleve, Chaetoceros sp., Coscinodiscus centralis Ehrenberg, seguidas dos dinoflagelados (10,79%), cianofíceas (6,37%), clorofíceas (3,92%), euglenofíceas (3,43%) e silicoflagelados (0,49%). As concentrações de oxigênio demonstraram uma alta capacidade de renovação do ambiente devido ao aporte de águas marinhas; maiores concentrações de nutrientes e biomassa algácea ocorreram durante o período chuvoso e nas baixa-mares. A pluviometria e o aporte marinho foram os parâmetros que mais influenciaram na hidrologia e na distribuição da comunidade fitoplanctônica com reflexo na riqueza taxonômica. This work aimed to evaluate spatial and temporal variations of the microphytoplankton and environmental variables in the Formoso River estuary, southern coast of Pernambuco state. The samples were collected at three stations, in the rainy season (May to July/2002) and dry season (October to December/2002). The plankton samples were obtained through horizontal superficial hauls, with a 64ìm-mesh net. Temperature and transparency were recorded in situ and, at the same time, water samples were collected using a Kitahara bottle to analyze salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and biomass. The Amazon River estuary is notable at the Amazon Continental Shelf, where the presence of the large amount of water originating from the Amazon during the river's falling discharge period was made evident by the low salinity values and high nutrient levels. Even so, the presence of oceanic waters in the shelf area was significant. Dissolved organic nitrogen was the predominant species of the nitrogen cycle phases, followed by total particulate nitrogen, nitrate, ammonium and nitrite. The chlorophyll a data in the eutrophic area indicated that there is sufficient nitrogen in the area to withstand productivity, though dissolved inorganic nitrogen removal processes are faster than regeneration or mineralization. The anomalous amounts of inorganic dissolved nitrogen showed more removal than addition. The simulations with the bidimensional MAAC-2D model confirmed that high nutrient waters are displaced northwestward (two cores at 2.5 • N-50 • W and 4 • N-51 • W) by the stronger NBC during falling river discharge. During high river flow period these nutrient-rich lenses are distributed around 0.5 • N-48.5 • W as well as along the shallow Amazonian shelf (20m-50m depth, 1 • N-3.5 • N), as a result of the spreading of Amazon freshwater outflow.

Recife, at Ipojuca (Pernambuco, Brazil), and stands out on the state coast for showing two of the most productive ecosystems: reef and estuary. The objective of this study was to diagnose the current status of these ecosystems considering phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and productivity (C 14 ), and some environmental variables such as depth, water transparency, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrient salts, pH and particulate suspended material. Samples were collected from the surface at six sites during high and low daytime spring tides on three months during each season, rainy and dry. Salinity varied from 1 to 37, oxygen saturation from 56.78 to 173.82%, nitrite and phosphate were less than 1µmol.L -1 , nitrate was <3.5µmol.L -1 and silicate varied from 11.71 to 92.26µmol.L -1 ; biomass ranged from 1.11 to 18.72mg.m -3 and productivity from 4.62 to 75.27mgC.m -3 .h -1 . According to Principal Components Analysis (PCA) results, there was high positive correlation between tides, depth, transparency, salinity and dissolved O 2 , and inverse correlation to silicate, chlorophyll a, productivity and assimilation rate; also, the pluviometry was directly correlated to nitrite, nitrate and phosphate and inversely to temperature. The environment showed to be homogeneous, that is, without thermal and saline stratification, varying from oligohaline to euhaline and predominantly supersaturated throughout the study, typical of unpolluted areas, and the trophic rate varied from oligotrophic to eutrophic. INTRODUÇÃOAs áreas costeiras são as mais ricas dos oceanos e respondem por mais da metade da sua produtividade sendo responsável por quase o total da pesca mundial. Ao longo dos litorais, sais nutrientes são retirados do continente, ventos de superfície e correntes marítimas dragam sedimentos ricos nestes sais, e a luz solar favorece o crescimento de organismos fotossintetizantes (Corson, 2002).Em conseqüência da entrada constante dos nutrientes de origem continental, as águas costeiras tendem a não apresentar exaustão total destes sais, mesmo nos trópicos (Pereira & Soares-Gomes, 2002). RESUMOO presente trabalho foi desenvolvido na Bacia do Pina-PE cuja área estuarina está situada na parte interna do Porto do Recife, em plena zona urbana. É formada pela confluência dos rios Tejipió, Jiquiá, Jordão, Pina e pelo braço sul do Capibaribe. O trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a dinâmica desta bacia em relação à salinidade, determinar o comportamento conservativo ou não conservativo dos nutrientes, registrando a disponibilidade nutricional e o desenvolvimento da população fitoplanctônica através da sua biomassa ao longo do estuário. As amostras de água foram coletadas na superfície para a determinação das análises hidrológicas e biomassa fitoplanctônica e na coluna d'água para a salinidade, utilizando-se garrafa de Nansen, em quatorze estações fixas, durante a baixa-mar, no final do inverno de 2000. Quanto a salinidade a Bacia do Pina apresentouse, nas porções mais externas como um estuário de cunha salina, nas porções intermediárias homogêneo e parcialmente misturado e na porção superior bem misturado. Os nutrientes apresentaram um comportamento não conservativo, com o nitrito, nitrato e o silicato sendo absorvidos (principalmente em salinidades mais baixas) e amônia e o fosfato adicionados ao ecossistema. Em relação ao fosfato, as pequenas variações mostram que o sistema tampão está ocorrendo com esse nutriente. A relação N:P variou de 14:1 a 3:1, demonstrando um ambiente altamente dinâmico quanto à disponibilidade nutricional, sem apresentar, porém nenhum nutriente limitante, apesar dos valores estarem abaixo da relação de Redfield. O nitrogênio foi o fator principal que influenciou o desenvolvimento fitoplanctônico, detectado através da relação N:P e pela análise dos Componentes Principais. O valor máximo do material em suspensão foi de 60,0 mg/l, considerado alto devido aos intensos aportes continentais. Esse fato propicia uma melhor penetração de luz, facilitando o processo fotossintético em todas as estações, apresentando-se a área como um ambiente eutrófico, com um valor máximo de clorofila de 105,20 mg.m -3 . De um modo geral, porém, a biomassa aumentou da boca da barra (estação 1) até a estação 8, diminuindo a partir daí até o ponto de confluência dos rios e elevando-se novamente nas estações que se encontram no estuário do rio Tejipió. A análise cofenética foi significativa, com um r >0,7, apresentando três áreas com distintas influências marinha e fluvial.

Abstract.-This paper presents a hydrobiological time series at Barra de Jangadas estuary in Northeastern Brazil. Studies were carried out during seven consecutive days from a spring to a neap tide, in one fixed station during the dry (January) and rainy (July) seasons, in 2001. The meteorology (rainfall, evaporation, wind intensity), hydrology (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen-DO and relative saturation, BOD 5 , nutrients (NH 3 + NH 4 , NO 2 -, NO 3 -, PO 4 -3 , SiO 2 )), bathymetry, current intensity and, chlorophyll-a, were studied. The principal component analysis (PCA) explained 80% of the total variance showing an inverse relationship between nutrients and DO, salinity and pH. This analysis showed a positive correlation between low tide and nutrients, indicating anthropogenic pollution. The water temperature presented low seasonal variation, similar to chlorophyll-a, which presented values over 20 mg m -3 , characterizing a eutrophic environment. Higher salt concentrations were registered during the dry season with no vertical stratification. DO varied significantly in both seasons. Total dissolved inorganic nitrogen and dissolved inorganic Phosphorus values in July were in general 2 to 5 times higher than values registered in January, respectively. The average N/ P ratio varied from 35:1 in January to 8:1 in July, being both phosphate and nitrogen limiting for phytoplankton growth. Night/day differences showed that in January, ammonia decreased in higher proportion than the other nitrogen compounds indicating assimilation by the autotrophic organisms during the day. , SiO 2 )), batimetría, intensidad de las corrientes y clorofila-a. Los valores totales de nitrógeno y fósforo inorgánico disuelto en julio fueron en promedio 2 y 5 veces superiores a los de enero, respectivamente. Las medias de N:P variaron de 35:1 en enero a 8:1 en julio, siendo ambos, el fosfato y el nitrógeno limitantes para el crecimiento del fitoplancton.
