La terapia ocupacional (TO) se encarga de la promoción, prevención y rehabilitación de la salud por medio de la ocupación, de modo tal que es una disciplina de relevancia en la satisfacción de necesidades de salud de nuestros adultos mayores, por lo que se centra en las actividades diarias que el adulto realiza, se le atribuye un significado y una relevancia puesto que la TO permite desempeñar roles e integrarnos a la sociedad. Por este motivo lo que se pretende con el proyecto “Feliz como una lombriz”, es retroalimentar los conocimientos y habilidades que tiene el adulto mayor mediante la terapia ocupacional trabajando con actividades de jardinoterapia con el fin de mejorar sus capacidades físicas, sociales y psicológicas así como optimizar sus estilos de vida saludable ayudando a prevenir o reducir los problemas de enfermedades al beneficiarse del ejercicio, permitiéndoles desarrollar capacidades cognitivas y físicas para dejar a un lado el sentimiento de incompetencia. De acuerdo con esto se trabajara con los adultos en diversas actividades relacionadas con la jardinería con el fin de beneficiar sus habilidades cognitivas, dificultades motoras, así como también mejorar sus emociones y su interacción con los demás. Puesto que Una investigación de la Universidad de Texas reunió a 298 adultos mayores para realizarles una encuesta y así saber su entusiasmo por la vida, el resultado fue que los niveles más altos de optimismo, resolución global y fortaleza; se encontró en aquellos que practicaban en la jardinería. Así también se encontró estudios de personas con demencia y ansiedad han encontrado en los beneficios de la jardinería calmar su agitación, lo que los lleva a tener mejores patrones de sueño y mejorar la calidad de su descanso.
