El cultivo de caña de azúcar (Saccharum officinarum L.) es importante en México en términos de superficie sembrada, empleos generados y productores que participan en su cultivo. Este artículo plantea que el rendimiento por hectárea a nivel municipal del cultivo de caña de azúcar, no se atribuye únicamente a factores de manejo del cultivo y ambientales, sino que requiere considerar factores que se relacionan con la competitividad territorial como son los servicios disponibles y aspectos sociales. La investigación fue de tipo descriptivo y transversal; se utilizó la información del padrón cañero generado (INEGI, 2007) de los 667 municipios que reportaron producción de caña en el país sólo en 267 se pudo construir un índice de servicios necesario para corroborar la hipótesis, en total se construyeron cuatro índices con 18 indicadores. Para el análisis de datos, se usó el análisis de componentes principales y se generó un modelo de regresión múltiple. Los resultados permitieron corroborar la hipótesis que el rendimiento por hectárea a nivel municipal de este cultivo, se atribuye principalmente al manejo del mismo, los daños al cultivo derivados del medio ambiente, los servicios disponibles para el cultivo y aspectos sociales (educación, vivienda y conectividad). Se concluye que el rendimiento de un cultivo debe abordarse con una visión holística ya que fue posible establecer de manera cuantitativa la interconexión de factores no sólo agronómicos y ambientales, como tradicionalmente se piensa. Esto justifica el diseño de una política integral para atender al sector.
El crecimiento poblacional y sus demandas hacen que el sector agropecuario sea cada vez más dinámico y complejo, situación que retoma la importancia de la tipología como un instrumento para el desarrollo de políticas públicas, especialmente para zonas áridas y semiáridas. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron: (i) crear una tipología multidimensional que integre la caracterización y clasificación de los tipos de agricultura (CTA) con la caracterización y clasificación de los tipos de productores (CTP); e (ii) identificar las dinámicas agropecuarias de la región Altiplano Oeste Potosino utilizando una tipología multidimensional. La investigación tuvo como base 1044 encuestas, los datos fueron analizados utilizando como técnica de agrupación el análisis clúster. Los cultivos de frijol, maíz, chile, cebolla y ganado bovino y ovino son la base del ingreso agropecuario y son las principales cadenas productivas de la región. Se identificaron seis tipos de CTA, todos sistemas mixtos que buscan brindar mayor certidumbre en el ingreso, y cinco tipos de CTP; los menos capitalizados fueron los más representativos de la región (52.9 %). Al combinar CTA con CTP para crear una tipología multidimensional se observó que la principal estrategia de supervivencia se basa en la pluriactividad y el acceso a programas sociales y subsidios, donde las labores no agropecuarias representan más de 50 % del ingreso familiar. Se concluye sobre la necesidad de un cambio de paradigma al considerárseles como “empleados rurales” y no como productores ocampesinos, generando la necesidad de una política rural queconsidere esta realidad.
La hormiga escamolera (L. apiculatum Mayr) es importante económicamente para las comunidades rurales. En cuatro localidades del Altiplano Potosino-Zacatecano, durante la recolecta de escamoles 2010, se identificaron nidos de la hormiga escamolera, y se determinó su rendimiento, su relación con el hábitat y su tamaño poblacional de sus colonias. En los nidos registrados se evaluaron las variables: condición del nido, calidad del nido, cantidad de hormigas (escasa, regular y abundante), tipo de sustrato de anidación y rendimiento de escamol. La condición de nidos se comparó mediante Índices de Abundancia Relativa, Densidad Relativa. Para determinar la asociación entre la calidad del nido y la cantidad de hormigas se utilizaron las Frecuencias de Observación (FO) y tablas de contingencias independientes de c2. Para determinar el efecto del sustrato de anidación y el rendimiento del escamol (peso limpio en g) se realizó un ANOVA. Se registraron 77 nidos; la condición del nido que predominó fue la “perturbada” (79o%), con una densidad relativa promedio de 4.14 nidos km-1. Las FO y el análisis de c² identificaron una mayor relación (3.47) entre una cantidad de hormigas escasa-mala calidad y una cantidad regular de hormigas-muy buena calidad (2.06) del nido (p=0.001999). El ANOVA identificó una relación entre el sustrato de anidación y el rendimiento de escamol (p=0.0013), con un mayor rendimiento en el sustrato de anidación nopal (36 %).
