Abstract. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about a potential increase of addictive behaviors. Adolescents are considered particularly vulnerable to a problematic usage of digital applications. For the first systematic investigation of screen time and problematic usage patterns over the course of the pandemic, a pre-pandemic survey on adolescent social media (SM) and gaming use was extended to a longitudinal study. Here we present the results of the first two measurements points (pre-pandemic/under lockdown). Methods: A representative sample of 1,221 adolescents (10–17 years) participated in an online survey in 09/2019, 824 of them in 04/2020. Prevalence rates were measured at baseline with standardized scales covering ICD-11 criteria for problematic usage patterns. These were statistically compared and related to pre- and under-lockdown screen time. Results: Pre-pandemic prevalence rates for pathological SM/gaming were about 3 % each, for at-risk usage 8–10 % including more boys than girls. Usage frequencies and screen times significantly increased under the lockdown. The predictive value of usage patterns for screen time decreased from before to during the lockdown. Changes in screen time could not be predicted by the usage pattern. Discussion: The stability of the observed rates and effects should be further examined over the course of the pandemic. This will lead to relevant implications for prevention measures and the allocation of intervention resources.

During a threatening encounter, people can learn to associate the aversive event with a discrete preceding cue or with the context in which the event took place, corresponding to cue-dependent and context-dependent fear conditioning, respectively. Which of these forms of fear learning prevails has critical implications for fear-related psychopathology. We tested here whether acute stress may modulate the balance of cue-dependent and contextual fear learning. Participants ( N = 72) underwent a stress or control manipulation 30 min before they completed a fear-learning task in a virtual environment that allowed both cued and contextual fear learning. Results showed equally strong cue- and context-dependent fear conditioning in the control group. Stress, however, abolished contextual fear learning, which was directly correlated with the activity of the stress hormone cortisol, and made cue-dependent fear more resistant to extinction. These results are the first to show that stress favors cue-dependent over contextual fear learning.

Adolescence is a critical phase for the development of substance use disorders (SUDs). For Europe and Germany, there are limited data on problematic substance use from representative youth samples. Trait mindfulness is relevant in buffering against substance use-related problems and associated deficits in self-regulatory control. The objective of this study is to estimate 12-month prevalence rates for SUDs in a representative sample of adolescents in Germany and to examine associations with mindfulness and related factors such as stress, impulsivity, sensation seeking and symptoms of psychopathology. A sample of 4001 adolescents aged 12–18 years from Germany was surveyed based on DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for SUDs. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine associations with mindfulness-related variables. Criteria of at least one of the assessed SUDs were endorsed by 11.2% of the adolescents. Alcohol use disorders had the highest prevalence rate (10.1%) followed by cannabis use disorders (2.6%). For both substances, the criteria for abuse were met about twice as often as those for dependence. The prevalence of cigarette dependence was 1.7%, while the prevalence for e-cigarette dependence was only 0.1%. Prevalence rates were higher for male youth and increasing with age. SUD prevalence was also related to mindfulness, impulsivity and sensation seeking and externalizing symptoms of psychopathology. The statistically significant associations varied across different SUDs. SUDs appear highly prevalent among German adolescents. The results have public health implications with regard to treatment needs and prevention measures in the youth population in Germany.

Zusammenfassung: Hintergrund: Infolge einschneidender Veränderungen des Familienalltags aufgrund der COVID-19-Pandemie äußert eine Mehrheit der Eltern in Deutschland Unterstützungsbedarf im Umgang mit ihren Kindern. Kinder und Jugendliche wiederum sind im Jahr 2020 unter den Maßnahmen zur Infektionseindämmung erhöhten psychischen Belastungen und Risiken ausgesetzt. Das Multi-Familien-Programm „Familien (achtsam) stärken“ zielt auf die Prävention von Suchtstörungen und anderen psychischen Erkrankungen bei Kindern und Jugendlichen ab und stärkt die Familienfunktionalität. Aufgrund der Pandemie ist das Programm im Jahr 2020 digital adaptiert worden. Ziel: Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es, die Inanspruchnahme für dieses Präventionsangebot zu explorieren und mit der Inanspruchnahme für die vor der Pandemie durchgeführte Präsenzvariante zu vergleichen. Methode: Dabei werden Anmeldezahlen, Studienabbruchraten und Abbruchgründe im Zeitraum von August 2020 bis März 2021 (während der Pandemie) und August 2019 bis März 2020 (vor der Pandemie) deskriptiv ausgewertet. Ergebnisse: Während der Pandemie stiegen die Anmeldezahlen um 8,17 %. Die Studienabbruchrate ist gesunken. Die häufigsten Abbruchgründe sind Bedenken hinsichtlich der digitalen Durchführung, intrafamiliäre Probleme oder Krankheit und nachlassendes Interesse. Schlussfolgerung: Digitale Präventionsprogramme stellen ein relevantes und zukunftsfähiges Hilfsangebot für Familien dar, wobei mögliche Hürden für die Inanspruchnahme beachtet werden sollten.
