Flexible orientation through any environment requires a sense of current relative heading that is updated based on self-motion. Global external cues originating from the sky or the earth‘s magnetic field and local cues provide a reference frame for the sense of direction. Locally, optic flow may inform about turning maneuvers, travel speed and covered distance. The central complex in the insect brain is associated with orientation behavior and largely acts as a navigation center. Visual information from global celestial cues and local landmarks are integrated in the central complex to form an internal representation of current heading. However, it is less clear how optic flow is integrated into the central-complex network. We recorded intracellularly from neurons in the locust central complex while presenting lateral grating patterns that simulated translational and rotational motion to identify these sites of integration. Certain types of central-complex neurons were sensitive to optic-flow stimulation independent of the type and direction of simulated motion. Columnar neurons innervating the noduli, paired central-complex substructures, were tuned to the direction of simulated horizontal turns. Modeling the connectivity of these neurons with a system of proposed compass neurons can account for rotation-direction specific shifts in the activity profile in the central complex corresponding to turn direction. Our model is similar but not identical to the mechanisms proposed for angular velocity integration in the navigation compass of the fly Drosophila.

The perceiving mind constructs our coherent and embodied experience of the world from noisy, ambiguous and multi-modal sensory information. In this paper, we adopt the perspective that the experience of pain may similarly be the result of a probabilistic, inferential process. Prior beliefs about pain, learned from past experiences, are combined with incoming sensory information in a Bayesian manner to give rise to pain perception. Chronic pain emerges when prior beliefs and likelihoods are biased towards inferring pain from a wide range of sensory data that would otherwise be perceived as harmless. We present a computational model of interoceptive inference and pain experience. It is based on a Bayesian graphical network which comprises a hidden layer, representing the inferred pain state; and an observable layer, representing current sensory information. Within the hidden layer, pain states are inferred from a combination of priors p(pain), transition probabilities between hidden states p(paint+1∣paint) and likelihoods of certain observations p(sensation∣pain). Using variational inference and free-energy minimization, the model is able to learn from observations over time. By systematically manipulating parameter settings, we demonstrate that the model is capable of reproducing key features of both healthy- and chronic pain experience. Drawing on mathematical concepts, we finally simulate treatment resistant chronic pain and discuss mathematically informed treatment options.

The biggest change in the mobile market in the coming years will not happen at the top consumer level where high end mobile devices will be equipped with the latest multimedia tools but at the untapped market of about one billion people in the mid segment of the world economic pyramid whose potential to become profitable telecom customers has been underestimated and misunderstood.In the Rural Living Lab (RLL) in Sekhukhune, South Africa, the C@R research project is developing mobile solutions that support Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) to cope with business challenges in emerging economies. The first prototype already has proven its viability and appropriateness in the real world use case -Mobile Procurement.Many important lessons learned and valuable outcomes have been derived which will significantly influence the further development of mobile solutions for the next billion mobile subscribers.

People showing symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often present an impairment of reaction time and response inhibition. These executive functions are influenced by nicotinergic acetylcholine receptors (nAchr) as mediators of cholinergic signaling, and show differences between both sexes. We examined the effects of two functional polymorphisms rs3841324 (S/L) and rs16969968 (G/A) of the cholinergic gene CHRNA5, ADHD symptoms and sex on response inhibition/reaction time in the Stop Signal Task. In the analyses, 183 participants (52.4% females)were included. In participants carrying the diplotype (SS_GG), men with ADHD symptoms responded faster, while men without ADHD symptoms were slower than women (F = 5.313; p = 0.023; η p ² = 0.034). Although explorative, this threefold interaction on reaction time but not response inhibition extend previous findings, suggesting a moderating effect of ADHD symptoms in men carrying the CHRNA5 diplotype SS_GG and might inspire research on genotype-and gender-specific ADHD medication.

Under the surface of our societies, there are thousands and thousands of stories which could add nuances and details to a black-and-white picture of historical events. But many of these stories are too private, too personal or too traumatic to share. Feelings like despair, shame or guilt might be associated, and one could be afraid of the reactions of others when telling them. Here, museum institutions and museum professionals might function as mediators and connecting links between those who want to share but do not know how – and those who need to know. In this article, we present the first results of a documentary- and exhibition project dealing with the long-term consequences of WW2—in the families and in the local societies. 21 informants, mainly from the second and third generation, were questioned about how difficult and traumatic experiences—during or after the war—affected their families and their own feeling of identity. The answers we received showed that especially the not-knowing what has happened often has severe effects on one’s personal life and well-being.
