La crisis ambiental tiene en vilo la vida en el planeta, situación que reta a las universidades a comprender sus causas y generar estrategias que impacten en el largo plazo. Pese a este panorama, la educación ambiental en la educación superior refleja un carácter instrumental que pretende atacar los problemas de manera puntual y, generalmente no se remite a sus causas más estructurales, reflejo de las mismas formas de conocer y concebirlos. ¿Desde qué enfoque teórico y epistemológico se entiende el ambiente en las tesis de maestría de ciencias sociales?, ¿qué tipo de formación ambiental reflejan las tesis?, ¿son abordadas en las tesis reflexiones desde un enfoque de la complejidad ambiental? Para responder estas preguntas se desarrolló una investigación cualitativa de modalidad documental en la cual fueron seleccionadas 73 tesis con contenido ambiental de 6 maestrías de ciencias sociales de dos universidades de Medellín-Colombia. Las tesis se revisaron para reconocer la concepción de ambiente que reproducen, con base en tres categorías: objeto, sistema y complejidad. Los hallazgos dan cuenta de que, aunque en menor medida, sigue siendo reproducida una concepción de ambiente como objeto, en especial, desde una visión economicista de la naturaleza; son evidentes cruces teóricos de las tres categorías de referencia, lo que refleja a la vez poca claridad epistemológica con respecto al concepto de ambiente y de problema ambiental. Como conclusión se vislumbra de manera tímida una comprensión de la complejidad ambiental en algunas tesis, que tratan de dar respuesta a la crisis ambiental a través de alternativas al desarrollo, o perspectivas teóricas críticas que cuestionan la visión hegemónica del mundo occidental.
