Os níveis de testosterona no homem adulto caem a uma taxa de 1 a 2% ao ano. Aos 80 anos mais de 50% irão apresentar concentração sérica compatível com hipogonadismo. A deficiência androgênica do envelhecimento masculino (DAEM) está associada a alguns sinais e sintomas como a queda da libido e disfunção erétil, depressão, anemia, diminuição da densidade óssea e massa muscular. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi, através de pesquisa bibliográfica na literatura especializada, avaliar os efeitos da reposição de testosterona em suas diferentes formas farmacêuticas sobre os sinais e sintomas supracitados. A reposição de testosterona aumenta a produção de eritrócitos e o hematócrito, melhora a libido e a disfunção erétil, o humor, aumenta a densidade óssea, a força e a massa muscular. As formas de administração trans dérmicas parecem ser superiores para o tratamento do humor deprimido e elevam menos o hematócrito em comparação as formas injetáveis além de promoverem níveis mais constantes de testosterona. As formulações injetáveis são as com preço mais acessível e podem ser uma alternativa para os pacientes que não toleram as formulações trans dérmicas. As apresentações orais são evitadas devido a sua hepatotoxicidade.
