This paper is written to present the usage of waste materials in modern design. At the beginning the author analyzes the sources of fascination with waste and trash in art. Then the phenomenon from the borderline of ecology, design and high art - upcycling (re-design) is described. Upcycling was introduced as a one of the methods to maintain the environment without doing any harm and to recreate useful products out of waste materials. By changing functions, uses, and meanings of old things designers give the product a new higher value. The author lists the values and advantages of this method and examples of using it in indoor and outdoor spaces and also in fashion. In the summary the social aspects of upcycling are presented.
Estetyka choroby i cierpienia w wybranych przedstawieniach artystycznych Współcześnie w odbiorze społecznym choroba jest czymś niechcianym, wstydliwym, odrażającym. Jest skrywana, ulega wszechobecnym obrazom ciała pięknego, zdrowego, sprawnego. A przecież od początków istnienia ludzkości choroba i ból właściwe są doświadczeniu każdego człowieka. Można zaryzykować stwierdzenie, że każdy zna je z autopsji. Doświadczenia te są jednak różne, bardzo indywidualne. Dlatego wizualne przedstawienia choroby kształtują się w przypadku poszczególnych artystów odmiennie. Aby przedstawić zyczność i meta zykę cierpienia, sięgają oni po rozmaite środki. Jedni przedstawiają ją dosłownie, realistycznie. Inni odnoszą się do symboliki i metafor. W dziełach przedstawiających świat choroby zawarte są też różne, czasem skrajnie odmienne wartości estetyczne. Niewątpliwie największą liczbę przedstawień w historii sztuki Zachodu, jeśli chodzi o pojęcie bólu, posiada ikonogra a chrześcijańska.
Many researchers show that the medium of the theatre can be an effective tool for collecting and analysing data and designing learning processes, especially when it comes to issues relevant to communities. Art-based research methods offer different ways of thinking, perceiving and researching social problems. The analysed theatrical play, ‘Tolerated Stay’, addresses the issues of hospitality in the context of refugees. The starting point is the history of a Chechen family with whom the artists worked and who stayed in Poland under a tolerated-stay permit. The play was realized in a private apartment. The convention of a meeting at a table opens the field for debate on the themes of the emigration and hospitality. In the analysis, three perspectives of hospitality were distinguished (of refugees, artists and participants). Following the principle of triangulation, different methods from theatre activity were supplemented by qualitative methods.
This article analyses the maritime cultural landscape of Szczecin, a port city connected by a river and a lagoon to the Baltic Sea, although at a considerable distance from the coast. The natural landscape does not have elements that are typically associated with the sea, but the local cultural landscape consists of many objects with maritime motifs and symbols (in particular monuments and other material elements). The study shows that the maritime cultural landscape of Szczecin can be divided into several categories: the cultural heritage connected with the German past, the communist period and present day. In each of these periods, the emphasis was placed on other functions of the cultural elements of the maritime landscape while maintaining its maritime identity. The authors used a variety of methods and research tools. This study was based on analysis of found documents. Visual data analysis was also used.
