Apesar de ser um ateu convicto e de sempre ter professado seu ateísmo, Freud, paradoxalmente, manifestou grande interesse pelo estudo do fenômeno religioso e empenhou-se seriamente em empregar elementos-chave da teoria psicanalítica para interpretar as origens e a natureza da religião. Seu posicionamento, porém, diante da religião, é freqüentemente divulgado em sua forma exclusivamente crítica e negativa. Neste artigo, nosso objetivo é mostrar que o texto freudiano, além do seu aspecto crítico inegável, oferece também outras contribuições valiosas que podem ser muito úteis para uma compreensão metapsicológica da experiência religiosa. Seus textos sobre a religião apresentam outras perspectivas de leitura, além da crítica cientificista, como também oferecem aportes teóricos que possibilitam novas formas de construções teóricas sobre psicanálise e religião. Um exemplo disso é a possibilidade de se considerar o conceito de sublimação para o estudo metapsicológico da temática religiosa. Essas novas possibilidades encontradas no texto freudiano se fazem pertinentes em virtude da freqüência com que questionamentos religiosos são levantados pelos clientes que permeiam a clínica contemporânea.
