E&&n Eintragan des Acenaphthyl -5glycinkalis 3) in geschmolzenes Natriumamid trat tnotz Unterbrechung der Wirmezufuhr eine aheraus lebhafte Reaktion ein, die ein kohliges Produkt lieferte, das init Wasser aufgenommen und filtriert mrde. August 1922.)Schon in der grundlegeden Brbeit, in der B a m b e r ge r und P h i 1 i p 4) zu der Auffassung gehgten, daB das P y r e n als dipericyclisches Derivat des Naphthalins mzusprechen sei, finden Versuche Erwahnung, die, vom Naphthalin ausgehend, auf eine Synthese des Pyrens abzieltens). Ein Erfolg ist aber diesen Versuchen versagt geblieben. Die Synthese des Pyrens ist erst zu einem vie1 spateren Zeitpunkt unter Verwendung Seitenketten enthaltender Derivate des Naphthalins (1.8.4.5-Naphthalin-tetracarbonsaure) 6) und Diphenyls (Di-o-tolyl) 7) als Ausgangsmateridien gelungen. Trotzdem hat aber der alte B a m b e r g e rmil P h i 1 i p sche Gedanlren, eine S yiithese des Pyrens v o m N a p h t h a l i n s e l b s t a u s g e h e n d zu hewerkstelligen, sein Interesse behalten, so daB wir uns entschlossen, seiner Verwirklichung auf Grund neuerer Erfahrungen nachzugehen.
Durch Oxydation der Acenaphthen-Mimethylacetyl-6-carbonsaure l). ferner der Acenaphthen-5-diathylacetyl-6-carbonsaure 2 ) , wie auch der Acenaphthalsaure 3, sind wir zur 1,8,4,5-Naphthalintetracarbonsaure von B amb e r g e r und P h i l i p 4 ) gelangt, die bisher nur beim dbbau des Pyrens isoliert worden ist. Besonders der in der vorstehendeii Sbhandlung beschriebene uber das Periacenaphthdiathyiindnndion fiihrende M7eg hat sich als verhaltnismabig einfach erwiesen, um diese Sanre darzustellen. Der Besitz eiuer etwas gro8eren Menge dieser Substanz lielS den Wunsch rege werden, zu versuchen, ob man, von diesem Abbauprodukt des Pyrens ausgehend, umgekehrt, durch Synthese, zu diesem Kohlenmasserstoff wieder zuruckgelangen konne.Dahinzielende Versuche, die wir unter Mitwirkung von Fraulein M a r t h a Cohn6) ausfuhrten, haben das in der Tat be s tatigt.Seit die Konstitution des Pyrens durch die grundegende Arbeit von B a m b e r g e r und Philip6) geklart worden ist, hat es an Versuchen nicht gefehlt, um diesen Kohlenwasserstoff zu synthetisieren.
