Background: To implement total body irradiation (TBI) using volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). We applied the Varian RapidArc™ software to calculate and optimize the dose distribution. Emphasis was placed on applying a homogenous dose to the PTV and on reducing the dose to the lungs.
We report smooth and broad continuum generation using a compact femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a tapered photonic crystal fibre as a nonlinear element. Spectral output is optimized for use in optical coherence tomography, providing a maximum longitudinal resolution of 1.5 microm in free space at 809 nm centre wavelength without use of additional spectral filtering.
Dislocation patterning in PbTe on PbSe (001) heteroepitaxy is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. It is shown that exceedingly regular square arrays of misfit dislocations are formed during strain relaxation. This is based on the existence of a homogeneous dislocation nucleation process, a high dislocation mobility within the interface, and an effective repulsive interaction between neighboring dislocations. Similar results are expected also for other highly mismatched heteroepitaxial systems.
In the last few years, various studies on terahertz (THz) birefringence have been presented, based on polarization-sensitive THz time-domain spectroscopy. The field of THz birefringence is a wide one covering several aspects, such as different materials exhibiting THz birefringence, polarization-sensitive THz technology, as well as numerous methods for extracting the birefringence properties of a sample from the THz data. Therefore, this paper aims at reviewing recent results on THz birefringence measurements presented in literature, addressing the above aspects and giving an overview of the topic. Moreover, it will focus on the investigation of birefringent fibrous samples, where specific results will be discussed in detail. Altogether, this paper should give a comprehensive view on the recent achievements in the measurements of THz birefringence.
We present a simple and versatile approach for fabricating terahertz lenses based on compression molding of micropowder polymer materials in a tabletop hydraulic press. To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, a biconvex lens shape is calculated using a ray-tracing algorithm and lenses based on two different micropowders are fabricated. As the powder materials have different refractive indices, the resulting lenses share the same geometric shape but differ in their respective focal length. The focusing properties of the lenses are evaluated by transversal and sagittal beam profile measurements in a fiber-coupled terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system, confirming the excellent imaging qualities of the compression molded lenses.
A terahertz time-domain spectrometer is employed to study different birefringent samples. We develop a method based on the temporal waveform and the impulse response of a sample to map the anisotropy of their inner structure. To validate our algorithm, we study the polarization-affecting structure of various classes of materials such as crystals, plastics, and natural products. Among all samples we observe the largest birefringence for a rutile crystal with Deltan=3.3 at 1 THz.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
