A case study conducted in a British company (Company A) on reengineering business processes is presented. It gives an example on how a case study ought to be written in order to go beyond the standard for writing an industrial report to one that is acceptable by academic peers. A good case study ought to contain information that readers can use in replicating the experiences gained and lessons learnt in future endeavours under similar settings. When a collection of good case studies is available to a practitioner or researcher he could formulate his plan for the future and avoid``re-inventing the wheel''. This is most important to research in operations management because it lends a hand in the building up of a theory in POM to make an impact in its natural settings.
With similar motivations and ftmctionalities, ERP and OSS play the same role as integrated IT platforms in manufacturing and telecommunication operations respectively. However, business processes, supply chains and resources in these two mdustries differ significantly. Therefore, OSS becomes the IT platform for telecommunication operations, and thus rejecting ERP's proclaimed universal applicability among all industries. However, as numerous similarities exist between ERP and OSS systems, valuable experience from ERP's research and development could still be applied to those of OSS.
Telecom world is changing rapidly. Traditional telecom companies used to be vertically integrated based on silo approach. Internet Protocol (IP) has revolutionized the telecom network providing uniform interface and a separation between infrastructure and services. Next Generation Networks are built around this separation. In these networks service creation will be independent of the infrastructure making it fast and economical. Technological advances are forcing disintegration of telecom companies at vertical level and integration at horizontal level. Telecom market is evolving towards a collection of companies working in different segments of the value chain. Service market is going to fall apart from the infrastructure segment. Such a service market will not only be feasible but also economically efficient. The future is a service market with more focused niche players doing business in a completely competitive manner and an access market having limited players.
This paper analyzes the balance and harmonization between two spectrum allocation models i.e. property rights and commons. It highlights the current regulatory approach towards migration to next generation wireless networks and proposes a balanced and fair approach for reform of spectrum policy.
