contribution by Schneider. The study of binary mixtures of polar components such as water or ammonia with nonpolar substances such as hydrocarbons in the critical range is also based on physicochemical measurement (Lentz and Frunck). The extractability of natural products in particular can be assessed with great facility and speed by using supercritical gases in the elegant chromatographic microanalysis developed by Stuhl. Practical possibilities and the theoretical basis of chromatography with supercritical gases are discussed by Klesper who was responsible for the first application of such systems to gas chromatography[*].Peter and Brunner have studied the separation of relatively involatile substances with compressed gases in a countercurrent process and have already made calculations for a largescale plant. The approach to the design of such plants is discussed by Eggers; the high-pressure systems necessarily involve a certain degree of sophistication. It is no coincidence that all the authors of the progress reports published in this issue come from West Germany, since it is here that the separation process was discovered and developed. For the sake of completeness, however, it should be mentioned that the extraction of coal with supercritical solvents such as toluene (T,=320°C, PC=41.6atm) has been studied in Great Britain since about 1970 with the support of the National Coal Boardr9]. Under these extreme conditions (350'C) up to about 30% of the coal can be extracted. The solvent-free extract contains more hydrogen than the coal (6.9 % instead of 4.9 %) and could be used in the production of hydrocarbon oils and as a chemical raw material. The economics of the process appear somewhat questionable.Numerous scientists from abroad also attended the Essen symposium and a general summary might be: the separation of substances with supercritical gases will probably find numerous further applications in the years to come.
