We have studied the interaction of ~55-psec-duration soliton pulse pairs over thousands of kilometers of optical fiber with loss periodically compensated by Raman gain. We indeed observe the expected short-range, phase-dependent interaction. But we also observe a long-range, phase-independent interaction caused by dispersive-wave radiation from the solitons.
We demonstrate experimentally an all-optical signal regenerator capable of ultrafast operation. An input data stream first forces mode locking of a cw fiber laser that generates a continuous stream of optical pulses at the line rate. This recovered clock is then modulated by the data stream in a nonlinear fiber loop mirror. We show that the regenerated data have less intensity variation and less temporal jitter than the incoming data.
