Colostrum was milked from all ewes at 3 h postpartum, and one-half of the ewes (n = 42) were transitioned to a common diet meeting lactation requirements and mechanically milked for 20 d. Colostrum yield was greater (P = 0.02) for HSe ewes than ASe, whereas CON had greater (P < 0.05) colostrum yield than RES and HIH. Colostrum Se (%) was greater (P < 0.01) for HSe than ASe. Colostrum from ewes fed HSe had less (P = 0.03) butterfat (%), but greater (P ≤ 0.05) total butterfat, solids-notfat, lactose, protein, milk urea N, and Se than ASe. Colostrum from HIH ewes had greater (P ≤ 0.02) solids-not-fat (%) than RES, whereas RES had greater (P ≤ 0.04) butterfat (%) than CON and HIH. Colostrum from ewes fed the CON diet had greater (P = 0.01) total butterfat than HIH. Total solids-not-fat, lactose, and protein were greater (P < 0.05) in colostrum from CON than RES and HIH. Ewes fed HSe had greater (P < 0.01) milk yield (g/d and mL/d) than ASe, and CON and HIH had greater (P < 0.01) yield than RES. Milk protein (%) was greater (P ≤ 0.01) in RES compared with CON or HIH. Ewes fed HSe had greater (P < 0.01) milk Se (μg/g and mg/d) than ASe on each sampling day. Milk from CON and HIH ewes had greater (P < 0.01) total solids-not-fat, lactose, protein, and milk urea N than RES. Total Se was greater (P = 0.02) in milk from ewes fed the CON diet compared with RES. Somatic cell count and total somatic cells were greater (P ≤ 0.05) in milk from CON than RES. A cubic effect of day (P ≥ 0.01) was observed for milk yield (g and mL). Butterfat, solids-not-fat, lactose, milk urea N, and Se concentration responded quadratically (P ≤ 0.01) to day. Protein (%), total butterfat, and total Se, and somatic cells (cells/mL and cells/d) decreased linearly (P < 0.01) with day. Results indicate that gestational nutrition affects colostrum and milk yield and nutrient content, even when lactational nutrient requirements are met.
ABSTRACT:The objective of the study was to examine the effect of growth-promoting technologies (GP) on Longissimus lumborum steak tenderness, muscle fiber cross-sectional area (CSA), and collagen solubility. Crossbred feedlot heifers (n = 33; initial BW 464 ± 6 kg) were blocked by BW and assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: no GP (CON; n = 11); implant, no zilpaterol hydrochloride (IMP; n = 11); implant and zilpaterol hydrochloride (COMBO; n = 11). Heifers assigned to receive an implant were administered Component TE-200 on d 0 of the study, and the COMBO group received 8.3 mg/ kg DM of zilpaterol hydrochloride for the final 21 d of feeding with a 3 d withdrawal period. Following harvest, strip loins were collected and fabricated into 4 roasts and aged for 3, 14, 21, or 35 d postmortem. Fiber type was determined by immunohistochemistry. After aging, objective tenderness and collagen solubility were measured. There was a treatment × day of aging (DOA) interaction for Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF; P < 0.01). At d 3 of aging, IMP and COMBO steaks had greater WBSF than CON steaks (P < 0.01). By d 14 of aging, the WBSF of IMP steaks was not different (P = 0.21) than CON steaks, but COMBO steaks had greater shear values than steaks of other treatments (P < 0.02). The COMBO steaks only remained tougher (P = 0.04) than the CON steaks following 35 DOA. Compared to CON muscles, IMP and COMBO type I and IIX muscle fibers were larger (P < 0.03). Treatment, DOA, or the two-way interactions did not impact measures of total and insoluble collagen (P > 0.31). Soluble collagen amount tended to be affected (P = 0.06) by a treatment × DOA interaction which was due to COMBO muscle having more soluble collagen than the other 2 treatments on d 21 of aging (P < 0.02). Correlation analysis indicated that type I, IIA, and IIX fiber CSA are positively correlated with WBSF at d 3 and 14 of aging (P < 0.01), but only type IIX fibers are correlated at d 21 and 35 of aging (P < 0.03). At these time periods, total and insoluble collagen became positively correlated with WBSF (P < 0.01). This would indicate that relationship between muscle fiber CSA and WBSF decreases during postmortem aging, while the association between WBSF and collagen characteristics strengthens. The use of GP negatively impacted meat tenderness primarily through increased muscle fiber CSA and not through altering collagen solubility.
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effect of increasing field pea level in high-concentrate finishing cattle diets on ADG, DMI, G:F, and carcass traits, and to estimate the NE of field pea. In Exp. 1, 118 yearling heifers (417.9 +/- 2.4 kg initial BW) were blocked by initial BW and assigned randomly to 1 of 4 treatments (0, 10, 20, or 30% dry-rolled field pea, DM basis; 4 pens/treatment). In Exp. 2, 143 beef steers (433 +/- 19 kg initial BW) were blocked by BW and assigned randomly to 1 of 4 treatments (0, 10, 20, or 30% dry-rolled field pea, DM basis; 6 pens/treatment). In Exp. 3, 80 beef steers (372.4 +/- 0.4 kg initial BW) were assigned randomly to 1 of 4 treatments (0, 18, 27, or 36% cracked field pea, DM basis; 4 pens/treatment). Field pea replaced a portion of the grain (dry-rolled and high moisture corn, dry-rolled corn, and barley and barley sprouts; Exp. 1, 2, and 3, respectively) and protein supplement. In Exp. 1, field pea inclusion decreased DMI linearly (P = 0.03), whereas ADG and G:F were not affected by treatment (P > or = 0.17); however, dietary NE(g) increased quadratically with increasing field pea level (P = 0.04). Fat thickness responded quadratically (P = 0.008) where heifers fed 20% field pea had greatest fat thickness and 30% field pea inclusion the least. Marbling tended (P < or = 0.09) to respond quadratically as field pea increased. No differences (P > or = 0.17) were observed for HCW, LM area, or KPH. In Exp. 2, DMI, ADG, G:F, dietary NE(g), HCW, marbling, LM area, 12th-rib fat, and USDA yield grade (YG) were unaffected by dietary field pea inclusion (P > or = 0.12). In Exp. 3, marbling score increased linearly (P = 0.05), fat thickness increased quadratically (P = 0.01), and YG tended to increase (P = 0.07) quadratically as field pea increased. Field pea inclusion did not affect (P > or = 0.38) DMI, ADG, G:F, dietary NE(g), HCW, or LM area. These results indicate that field pea can be included successfully into rations at levels up to 36% of DM without negatively affecting growth performance and most carcass characteristics of finishing beef cattle; however, effects on marbling score were variable. These data also indicate the energy content of field peas is similar to cereal grains, such as corn and barley, when included in high-concentrate finishing diets.
We hypothesized that a maternal diet greater in MP during the last third of gestation would yield improved offspring growth due to enhanced placental or mammary gland function. Our objective was to determine how MP intake during late gestation affected ewe and offspring performance from birth to weaning in ewes fed diets similar in total energy. In yr 1, maternal dietary treatments were applied at d 100 of gestation, were similar in total energy, and contained 60% of MP requirements (60MP1), 80% of MP requirements (80MP1), and 100% of the MP requirements (100MP1) on a DM basis during late gestation. In yr 2, maternal dietary treatments were similar in total energy and contained 60% of MP requirements (60MP2), 100% of the MP requirements (100MP2), and 140% of MP requirements (140MP2) on a DM basis during late gestation. In yr 1, there was no effect (P ≥ 0.30) of maternal MP restriction on gestation length, lamb birth weight, or milk production of the dam. At lambing, ewe BW (P = 0.02) and BCS (P = 0.01) increased linearly as MP in the diet increased. While there were no differences in lamb BW at birth, lamb weaning BW (P = 0.08) and ADG from birth to weaning (P = 0.10) tended to increase linearly as maternal MP intake increased. In yr 2, maternal BW increased with increased dietary MP. However, there were no significant effects (P ≥ 0.45) of maternal dietary treatment on maternal BCS or lamb birth weight. Moreover, lamb weaning weight and ADG were not influenced by maternal MP levels. These results suggest that ewes maintain and gain BW and BCS when consuming diets similar in total energy with increased MP during late gestation, but the increased MP had minimal effects on lamb performance through weaning.
