The occurrence of the enzyme ,B-galactosidase has been reported in a variety of microorganisms. As expected, the /8-galactosidases differ in their characteristics depending on the source. For example, Monod and Cohn (1952) have shown that the f3-galactosidases of Escherichia coli, Aerobacter aerogenes, and Shigella sonnei were indistinguishable from one another kinetically and serologically, but that the Saccharomyces fragilis and Lactobacillus bulgaricus ,B-galactosidases differed on the basis of these criteria from the E. coli enzyme. Recently Landman (1957) has shown that the /3-galactosidase produced by 1 This investigation was supported by the State of Washington Fund for Medical and Biological Research and by a National Science Foundation Research Grant.2 A preliminary report of this work was presented at the 59th Meeting of the Society of American Bacteriologists, St. Louis, Missouri, May 10-14, 1959. 3The data presented are taken from a thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Washington in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M.S. degree in Microbiology. 4 The same organism has been characterized as
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
