Terfenadine, a potent and non-sedative antihistamine, was shown to be effective in chronic idiopathic urticaria in a double-blind crossover placebo controlled trial. An oral twice daily 60 mg dose of terfenadine was given and itch and wheal parameters were assessed daily. Despite the overall effectiveness of terfenadine, a variable response was noted which was similar to that shown in previous studies with other antihistamines.
A randomised study of β-carotene/canthaxanthin or placebo in chronic plaque psoriasis has failed to show any significant difference in the time to clearing and in the total accumulative dose required. Orange discolouration and hyperpigmentation of the skin occurred in the test group. In patients studied outside the randomised comparison, 2 patients who had not been able to tolerate PUVA therapy because of burning were subsequently able to do so when β-carotene/canthaxanthin was added to their treatment regimen.
