Since 1977 all vaccinations against Poliomyelitis in pre-school age in the county of St-Gall have been paid for and evaluated by the local government. The comparison of the vaccinated children with the regionally registered births of 1978 showed that an average of 81% of children born in that year received at least two oral Polio vaccinations. The analysis on a regional basis shows, however, substantial local differences in the vaccination rates (25-100%). There is evidence for a positive correlation between vaccination rates and population density as well as between vaccination rates and the number of pediatritians.
