More than 10,000 tourists returning from tropical countries have been asked about health problems during their stay abroad. Preliminary results from the first 5,550 questionnaires indicate that 74,8% had complaints of any kind concerning their health and 13,6% can be considered as having been ill. The frequency of complaints and illness in relation to different variables is shown and the possibility of definition of high risk groups is being discussed.
Cancer mortality data of Switzerland and of the Canton of Zurich are being compared for the years 1969-1972. The pattern of distribution of the five most frequent cancer sites in Zurich compared to Switzerland shows a clear trend towards the American situation: increase of cancer of the colon, pancreas and lung, decrease of cancer of the stomach and esophagus. Incidence data of the first year of registration of the Zurich Tumor Registry are being discussed.
Since 1977 all vaccinations against Poliomyelitis in pre-school age in the county of St-Gall have been paid for and evaluated by the local government. The comparison of the vaccinated children with the regionally registered births of 1978 showed that an average of 81% of children born in that year received at least two oral Polio vaccinations. The analysis on a regional basis shows, however, substantial local differences in the vaccination rates (25-100%). There is evidence for a positive correlation between vaccination rates and population density as well as between vaccination rates and the number of pediatritians.
