Room-temperature laser action from Cr(2+)-doped Cd(0.85)Mn(0.15)Te has been demonstrated for what is believed to be the first time. We achieved pulsed laser operation centered at ~2.5mu m by pumping into the mid-infrared absorption band of Cr(2+) ions by use of the 1.907- mum output of a H(2) Raman-shifted Nd:YAG laser. The output of the free-running Cr(2+):Cd(0.85)Mn(0.15)Te laser had a width of ~50 nm (FWHM), and the slope efficiency was calculated to be 5.5% under nonoptimum conditions.

Depopulation of the Mn2+ state in ZnO:Mn upon illumination, monitored by quenching of the Mn 2+ EPR signal intensity, was observed at temperatures below 80 K. Mn 2+ photoquenching is shown to result from the Mn 2+ → Mn 3+ ionization transition, promoting one electron to the conduction band. Temperature dependence of this process indicates the existence of an energy barrier for electron recapture of the order of 1 meV. GGA+U calculations show that after ionization of Mn 2+ a moderate breathing lattice relaxation in the 3+ charge state occurs, which increases energies of d(Mn) levels. At its equilibrium atomic configuration, Mn 3+ is metastable since the direct capture of photo-electron is not possible. The metastability is mainly driven by the strong intra-shell Coulomb repulsion between d(Mn) electrons. Both the estimated barrier for electron capture and the photoionization energy are in good agreement with the experimental values.

We have used positron annihilation spectroscopy to study the vacancy defects in ZnO crystals grown by both the conventional and contactless chemical vapor transport (CVT and CCVT). Our results show that Zn vacancies or Zn vacancy related defects are present in as-grown ZnO, irrespective of the growth method. Zn vacancies are observed in CVT-grown undoped ZnO and (Zn,Mn)O. The Zn vacancies present in undoped CCVT-ZnO are the dominant negatively charged point defect in the material. Doping the material with As introduces also Zn vacancy-related defect complexes with larger open volume.

A comprehensive experimental study on the antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling in high quality epitaxial all-semiconducting EuS/ PbS/ EuS trilayers is reported. The influence of substrates, of the thickness of the nonmagnetic PbS spacer layer, and of temperature was investigated by means of SQUID magnetometry. In trilayers with a PbS thickness between 4 and 12 Å the low temperature hysteresis loops showed the signature of antiferromagnetic coupling. The value of the interlayer exchange coupling energy was determined by simulating the data based on a Stoner-Wohlfarth model. An important observation was that the interlayer exchange coupling energy varies strongly with temperature, consistent with a power-law dependence of the exchange coupling constant on the saturation magnetization of the EuS layers. While no theoretical description is readily available, we conjecture that the observed behavior is due to a dependence of the interlayer exchange coupling energy on the exchange splitting of the EuS bands.
