The influence of cultivar on responses of strawberry fruit to 20 kPa CO2 or air storage at 2 °C was measured for 7 days. CO2 storage increased firmness of all cultivars over air storage, but the degree of increase was affected by cultivar and days in storage. CO2‐treated fruit were lighter colored and less intensely red than air‐treated fruit. Accumulations of acetaldehyde, ethanol and ethyl acetate in CO2‐treated fruit were strongly affected by cultivar, with those in ‘Annapolis’ having the lowest and those in ‘Governor Simcoe’ having the highest concentrations. Genetic variation in this response provides useful material for investigating the metabolic basis of CO2 effects in strawberry fruit. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry
This chapter covers the traditional breeding of apples, natural and induced variation in the crop and the apple breeding programmes in 31 countries from around the world. Notes are presented on the breeding of apples for disease resistance, improved quality and nutrient contents, and reduced flesh browning and allergenicity. The use of genetic markers for the selection of crops with improved traits, as well as the use of biotechnology in the improvement of the crop are discussed.
23 Jan. 2001. 'Prelude' has a very early floricane (summer) crop, peaking in production before other standard cultivars in New York. 'Prelude' also produces a significant primocane crop in the fall and can be managed as a floricane, primocane, or everbearing cultivar. Yield as a floricane or as a primocane cultivar are highest when managed as such, but maximum annual yield is reached when managed as an everbearing cultivar. Most early maturing cultivars in the East Coast and Great Lakes growing regions ripen ≈10% to 15% of their crop by 10 July (Pritts and Handley, 1989). 'Prelude' ripens most of its fruit from late June to early July in Geneva thus expanding the raspberry season in these growing regions. Additionally, 'Prelude' is similar to other early fruiting cultivars in fruit size and yield even with this early harvest window. The fruit are firm and high quality with good flavor. 'Prelude' is suitable for wholesale shipping and direct retail sales. Origin 'Prelude' originated from a cross of NY817 x 'Hilton' made in 1971 (Fig.1). It was the only selection from the 141 progeny and was tested as NY1009 at multiple sites in Geneva and with grower cooperators throughout New York. 'Prelude' is being grown commercially in many raspberry growing regions in the U.S. and is being tested in several European countries and in South Africa. Literature Cited Daubeny, H. 1997. This chapter discusses the botany and history, importance, breeding and genetics, molecular genetics, micropropagation (for virus elimination), functional genomics, somatic cell genetics, genetic manipulation and cryopreservation of apple.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
