Tedera (Bituminaria bituminosa C.H Stirt. vars. albomarginata and crassiuscula) is a traditional forage species for goats in the Canary Islands, Spain. It has agronomic characteristics ideally suited to Mediterranean-like climates that allows it to provide high quality green forage for grazing animals during summer and autumn. It can be used to extend the growing season into late spring and early summer and/or to reduce or eliminate the need for expensive hand feeding of grain and hay to sheep to fill the ‘feed gap’ during the dry season in southern Australian farming systems. Three sheep grazing experiments were carried out with the objective to evaluate sheep production during summer and autumn with tedera as the sole diet. A 3-ha site at Dandaragan, Western Australia was grazed during the summer and autumn of 2014–2015 and 2016 and a 2.4-ha site was grazed at Kojonup, Western Australia during the same period in 2016. At each site, two grazing treatments were evaluated, continuous grazing and rotational grazing with six plots (14 days of grazing and 70 days of recovery). The first hypothesis tested was that tedera plants would not survive continuous grazing during summer and autumn. The second hypothesis tested was that without hand feeding, 10 dry sheep equivalents/ha would be able to at least maintain weight and condition score during summer and autumn. The third hypothesis tested was that rotational grazing would improve the production of the sheep (liveweight and condition score) compared with continuous grazing. The first hypothesis was rejected, the population of tedera plants did not significantly decline due to being continuously grazed during summer and autumn. The second hypothesis was confirmed, at the three experimental sites, 10 dry sheep equivalents/ha were able to at least maintain weight and condition score without any hand feeding. The third hypothesis was partially rejected; continuous grazing had a better performance of the sheep than rotational grazing. However, the rotational grazing plots had more tedera on offer in the remaining grazing plots in the rotation with the potential for a longer grazing time. These three experiments clearly demonstrate that tedera can be used to reduce or eliminate expensive hand feeding during summer and autumn using the simplest and least expensive grazing management; continuous grazing.
Grazing livestock on revegetated saline land is one of few profitable options to continue using this class of agricultural land. However, there has been little research conducted to assess the capability of saline land to support livestock production based on the soil and water characteristics at a particular site. In this study, data from 11 grazing studies collected from eight commercial farms across southern Australia were used to estimate metabolisable energy (ME) utilised/ha, as well as total ME produced/ha. All data were from the autumn (March–May) period, when feed is normally in short supply and of limited quality. Site characteristics indicative of the severity of salinisation varied across the sites. Topsoil electrical conductivity (ECe) ranged from 1 to 33 dS/m and groundwater EC from 14 to 60 dS/m (equivalent to sea water). Feed on offer before grazing varied from 700 kg dry matter/ha to 9000 kg dry matter/ha between sites. Thinopyrum ponticum and Puccinellia ciliata featured prominently in the less saline revegetated sites, with Atriplex spp. present on the more saline sites and some lucerne and rhodes grass on the less saline, well drained sites. Grazing days per ha for sheep (ME-adjusted dry sheep equivalent) on autumn pastures across the sites ranged from 41 to 3600, and liveweight gains ranged from –95 to 314 g/sheep.day. The grazing value of the highest producing saltland was at least as high as that expected on adjacent areas that were not salt affected. The major advantage of establishing saltland pastures included an out-of-season feed supply high in crude protein and micronutrients that possessed the ability to capture summer and autumn rain. This should represent a substantial reduction in supplementary feed costs and increases the flexibility of methods for feeding livestock through periods of low annual pasture availability. The value of the ME produced on the highest yielding saltland pasture was estimated to be $360/ha based on substituting the best alternative strategy of purchasing lupin grain as a supplement. A quadratic relationship (R2 = 0.62, P = 0.024) was found between soil ECe and ME produced across the sites. Significant relationships were not found between other saline site characteristics and ME production, which partly reflects the complexity of these systems as well as limitations with site characterisation.
Tedera (Bituminaria bituminosa var. albomarginata) is a perennial legume native to Lanzarote, an island within the Canary Islands; known for its dry environment. It is a plant known as a grazing option within that island. Tedera was tested for its potential as an optional feed source for sheep grazing under Western Australian conditions, also known for its frequent periods of drought stress. Four sets each of 35 seasonal samples were taken from seven accessions of the legume, in an area known to have less than 600 mm of rain each year. Milled leaf-stem samples were analysed for a series of nutritive attributes and calibrations were developed using information in near infrared spectra. This paper presents findings, which demonstrate that some sound calibrations are possible for major nutritive attributes including acid detergent fibre, crude protein, calcium and chloride; for these attributes the ratio of performance to deviation exceeded a value of 4.5.
