RESUMO -Objetivou-se avaliar dois intervalos de pastejo de pastos de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.): um intervalo variável, quando o dossel atingisse 95% de interceptação da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa, e um intervalo de pastejo fixo, de 26 dias. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo.O intervalo de pastejo, a altura do dossel no pré e pós-pastejo, a interceptação da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa e o índice de área foliar foram maiores quando aplicado o intervalo de pastejo fixo. Não houve efeito dos intervalos de pastejo sobre as massas de forragem, de folhas e de colmos no pré e pós-pastejo nem sobre a densidade volumétrica do dossel no pré-pastejo. A massa de material morto foi menor no intervalo de pastejo variável em comparação ao intervalo fixo, tanto no pré quanto no pós-pastejo. Os teores de fibra em detergente neutro e fibra em detergente ácido nos pastos manejados em intervalo variável foram menores que naquela com intervalo fixo. A aplicação de intervalo de pastejo variável, por permitir redução do tempo de descanso do pasto, tem efeitos positivos na qualidade da forragem.Palavras-chave: interceptação de luz, lotação rotacionada, manejo do pastejo, Pennisetum purpureum, período de descanso, valor nutritivo Productive and qualitative characteristics of elephant grass pasture grazed in fixed and intermittent intervals according to interception of active photosynthetic radiation ABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to evaluate two intervals of grazing on elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) pasture. It was tested a variable grazing interval when it was observed an interception of 95% of active photosynthetic radiation by sward, and a 26-day fixed grazing interval. The experimental design was a complete randomized design with time repeated measurements. The interval of grazing, pre and post grazing sward heights, sward interception of active photosynthetic radiation and leaf area index were greater when the fixed pasture interval was applied. There was no effect of intervals of grazing on forage mass, leaf mass and stem mass in pre-or post-grazing neither for sward volumetric density in pre grazing. Dead material mass was lower for variable grazing interval than in fixzed grazing for both pre and post grazing. Neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents were lower in the grazing managed in the variable interval than in the fixed grazing interval. Tropical pastures fertilized with nitrogen may have high crude protein (CP) contents with high rumen degradability. High crude protein concentrates offered to cows grazing these pastures may increase feed costs without positive effects on their performance. The objectives of this trial were to evaluate the effects of increasing metabolizable protein (MP) supply beyond the NRC (2001) recommendations for mid lactating dairy cows grazing elephant grass pasture (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. cv. Napier) managed with high stocking rates. Three concentrates (6.3 kg DM -1 cow -1 day -1 ) were evaluated: control (17%CP) was adjusted in relation to MP according to the NRC (2001); the other two contained extra soybean meal, to increase the CP content to 21.2% (CP) and 25.0% (CP). Twelve multiparous Holstein cows, averaging 150 days of milk production at a rate of 19.5 kg of milk day -1 , were used in a 3 × 3 latin square design, replicated four times. Forage consumption was 11,270 kg DM ha -1 with 34% of green leaves and 12% CP. Milk production, corrected to 3.5% fat, milk fat, protein, lactose and total solids contents were not affected by treatments (P > 0.05). Milk urea nitrogen and plasma urea nitrogen increased linearly (P < 0.05) as the MP supply increased. Treatments did not affect (P > 0.05) body weight gain, body condition score, grazing time, ruminating time, resting time, rectal temperature and respiratory rate. Crude protein content in the concentrate formulated according to NRC (2001) , arranjadas em QL 3 × 3 com quatro replicatas. A massa de forragem disponível era de 11.270 kg MS dia -1 com 34% de folhas verdes e 12% de PB. A produção de leite, produção de leite corrigida para 3,5%, teores de gordura, proteína, lactose e sólidos totais não foram afetados (P > 0,05) pelos tratamentos. O nitrogênio uréico do leite e o nitrogênio uréico do plasma aumentaram linearmente (P < 0,05) com o aumento do suprimento de proteína metabolizável. Os tratamentos não afetaram (P > 0,05) o ganho de peso, condição corporal, tempo de pastejo, tempo de ruminação, tempo em ócio, temperatura retal e a freqüência respiratória dos animais. O teor de PB no concentrado para suprir proteína metabolizável de acordo com o NRC (2001), é adequado para vacas em terço médio de lactação, mantidas em pastagens tropicais. Two experiments were conducted to study the partial substitution of fine ground corn by peleted pulp citric in the concentrate of lactating cows in middle lactation (Experiment I) and in late lactation (Experiment II), grazing elephant-grass pasture. The trials were conducted at the Animal Science Department of ESALQ/USP. In both experiments, the animals were grouped according to milk yield, days in milk and parturition order. The statistical designs were repeated 4 x 4 Latin Square. The data were analysed using the Proc GLM of SAS (1999). Experiment I: Eight Holstein cows (82 DIM and 522.9 kg LBW), at the beginning of the trial were used. The concentrates contained the following corn:peleted citrus pulp proportions: 100:0 (T0); 75:25 (T25); 50:50 (T50); 25:75 (T75). The cows received 7 kg of concentrate day-1 (6.3 kg of DM), fractionated in 2 daily meals. The pasture was fertilized with 80 kg N ha.month-1. The forage offer was of 33,6 kg DM of green leaves cow day-1. There was not difference (P>0.05) in the grazing time (7h22'), rumination time (8h36'), leisure time (5h56') x and biting rate (34.4 movements min-1). The rectal temperature (38.74 and 39.64ºC) and respiratory frequency (47.44 and 61.20 movements min-1), measured at 8:00 AM and at 3:30 PM, respectively, were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). There was not difference (P>0.05) in 3.5 % FCM yield (18.5 kg cow day-1), in the contents of milk fat (3.5%), protein (3.06%), lactose (4.40%) and total solids (13.02%), milk urea-N (15.01 mg dL-1) and of somatic cells (203.000 mL-1) were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). The LBW (536.8 kg), BCS (2.51), plasma glucose (75.90 mg dL-1), plasma urea-N (16.96 mg dL-1) and plasma free fat acids (456.12 mEq L-1) were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). Experiment II: Eleven cows were used, 7 Holstein and 4 Jersey (427.5 kg LBW and 153.22 DIM), at the beginning of the trial. The concentrates were 21.8% of CP (DM bases), and the respective corn:peleted citric pulp ratio were: 100:0 (T0); 75:25 (T25); 50:50 (T50); 25:75 (T75). The cows were fed 6.1 kg day-1 of concentrate (5.5 kg of DM), fractionated in 2 daily meals, after each milking. There was not difference (P>0.05) in 3.5 FCM yield (13.7 kg cow day-1), in the content of milk fat (3.8%), protein (3.37%) and total solids (13.27%), milk urea-N (14.34 mg dL-1) and somatic cells (140,450 mL-1). The lactose content was lower (P<0.05) for the 25:75 diet. The LBW (427.2 kg), BCS (2.74), plasma glucose (74.63 mg dL-1), plasma urea-N (16.74 mg dL-1), and plasma free fat acids (417.81 mEq L-1) were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). There were no difference (P>0.05) in the grazing time (7h51'), rumination time (7h59'), leisure time (6h) and biting rate (37.91 movements min-1). The rectal temperature (38.76 and 39.61ºC) and respiratory frequency (53.57 and 71.50 movements min-1), measured at 8:00 and at 15:30 hours, respectively, were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). The corn can be substituted by the citric pulp without depreciating the milk yield and content.
Objetivou-se avaliar duas frequências de pastejo em pastagens de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. cv. Cameroon): uma variável, determinada pela entrada dos animais na área a ser pastejada, quando o dossel atingisse 95% de interceptação da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa; e uma frequência fixa, de 26 dias. Utilizaram-se oito vacas com média de 124 dias em lactação, 516 kg de peso corporal e 17,5 kg de leite no início do experimento. O período experimental foi de 80 dias, divididos em quatro subperíodos de 20 dias. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o cross-over. As frequências de pastejo não influenciaram a produção e composição do leite, o nitrogênio ureico no plasma, o escore de condição corporal e a variação de peso corporal. Entretanto, a taxa de lotação e a produção de leite por unidade de área foram maiores nas pastagens com intervalo de pastejo determinado pela interceptação de 95% da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa. Assim, a frequência de pastejo definida em intervalos variáveis por meio da interceptação da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa resulta em maior produção de leite por unidade de área.
Feeding extra protein as an attempt to increase amino acid flux to the intestine may increase lactational performance of dairy cattle. The objective of this study was to compare lactating dairy cow diets containing 16% crude protein (CP), adequate in rumen degradable protein (RDP) and metabolizable protein (MP) according to NRC (2001), with diets containing 17.5% CP. Forty-two Holstein cows (27 primiparous and 15 multiparous, with 172 days in milk) were used in a 3 × 3 Latin Square design with 14 replicates. Control diet consisted of 16% CP, adequate in RDP and MP . Crude protein content of diets was increased to 17.5% by feeding extra soybean meal and cottonseed meal (SBCS-17.5) to increase diet MP, or extra urea (U-17.5) to increase diet RDP. The experiment was carried out during 60 days with three periods. Animals were groupfed a total mixed ration and milked twice a day. Dry matter intake was higher for the U-17.5 diet (p < 0.15) than for the control diet. Milk (p < 0.01) and 3.5% fat corrected milk (FCM-3.5%) (p < 0.05) yields were increased by extra soybean and cottonseed meal (SBCS-17.5) but not by extra urea (U-17.5). Milk fat content and yield were not affected by treatments (p > 0.05). Milk protein content decreased (p < 0.01) by feeding extra urea (U-17.5). However, higher (p < 0.01) protein yields were observed for the SBCS-17.5 treatment. For cows milking around 29 kg d -1 , increasing diet CP content to 17.5%, by feeding extra soybean and cottonseed meal, beyond recommendations for RDP and MP, increased yields of milk, yields of 3.5% fat corrected milk and yields of milk protein.Key words: cottonseed meal, metabolizable protein, protein sources, rumen degradable protein, soybean meal Quantidades e formas de proteína dietética para vacas em lactação RESUMO: O fornecimento de dietas com maior teor de proteína para aumentar o fluxo de aminoácidos para o intestino pode aumentar o desempenho lactacional. Compararam-se dietas para vacas em lactação contendo 16% de proteína bruta (PB), adequada em proteína degradável no rúmen (PDR) e proteína metabolizável (PM) (NRC, 2001) com dietas com maiores teores de PB (17,5%) . Quarenta e duas vacas (27 primíparas e 15 multíparas, com 172 dias em lactação) foram utilizadas em um delineamento do tipo Quadrado Latino 3 × 3, com 14 repetições. A dieta controle continha 16% de PB e era adequada em PDR e PM de acordo com o NRC (2001). O teor de PB das dietas foi aumentado para 17,5% através do aumento no fornecimento de farelo de soja e de algodão (SBCS-17,5) para aumentar a PM, ou uréia (U-17,5) para aumentar a PDR. O experimento teve duração de 60 dias com três subperíodos. Os animais foram alimentados em grupo com ração completa e ordenhados duas vezes ao dia. O consumo de matéria seca foi maior para a dieta U-17,5 (p < 0,15) do que para a dieta controle.
