statement: In a series of 51 patients with chest CT and RT-PCR assay performed within 3 days, the sensitivity of CT for COVID-19 infection was 98% compared to RT-PCR sensitivity of 71% (p<.001).
Magnetic levitation is a recent research hot spot; however, most of the extant configurations use two magnets with like poles facing each other. This paper proposes a novel magnetic levitation configuration that is based on a single ring magnet, and this configuration opens a wide operational space that enables object manipulation and density-based measurement. We develop a mathematical model to calculate the magnetic field around the magnet and to numerically correlate the levitation height and density of the object. Experimental results prove that this novel configuration can achieve a high accuracy (±0.0005 to ±0.0078 g/cm) in density measurement for small-sized (∼5 μL) samples. It can manipulate particles, powders, and oil droplets effectively without any direct contact, and it has high sensitivity in the separation of multiple diamagnetic objects with slight differences in densities as well. The accuracy and sensitivity of the proposed configuration are both higher than those of the extant configurations. All of these results are expected to promote deeper study and applications of the magnetic levitation configuration in the field of density-based characterizations and manipulations.
Air pollution caused by particulate matter and toxic gases is violating individual’s health and safety. Nanofibrous membrane, being a reliable filter medium for particulate matter, has been extensively studied and applied in the field of air purification. Among the different fabrication approaches of nanofibrous membrane, electrospinning is considered as the most favorable and effective due to its advantages of controllable process, high production efficiency, and low cost. The electrospun membranes, made of different materials and unique structures, exhibit good PM2.5 filtration performance and multi-functions, and are used as masks and filters against PM2.5. This review presents a brief overview of electrospinning techniques, different structures of electrospun nanofibrous membranes, unique characteristics and functions of the fabricated membranes, and summarization of the outdoor and indoor applications in PM filtration.
A comprehensive three-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate forestry residues gasification in a fluidized bed reactor using Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The complex granular flow behaviors and chemical reaction characteristics are addressed simultaneously. The model uses an Eulerian method for fluid phase and a discrete particle method for solid phase, which takes particle contact force into account. Heterogeneous and homogenous reaction rates are solved on the Eulerian grid. The numerical model is employed to study the gasification performance in a lab-scale pine gasifier. A series of simulations have been performed with some critical parameters including temperature, equivalence ratio and steam to biomass ratio. The model predicts product gas composition and carbon conversion efficiency in good agreement with experimental data. The formation and development of flow regimes, profiles of particle species, and distributions of gas compositions inside the reactor are also discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
