Single-Ring Magnetic Levitation Configuration for Object Manipulation and Density-Based Measurement

Abstract: Magnetic levitation is a recent research hot spot; however, most of the extant configurations use two magnets with like poles facing each other. This paper proposes a novel magnetic levitation configuration that is based on a single ring magnet, and this configuration opens a wide operational space that enables object manipulation and density-based measurement. We develop a mathematical model to calculate the magnetic field around the magnet and to numerically correlate the levitation height and density of the… Show more

“…[10][11][12][13][14][15] Local mechanical properties are also a vital factor in the application of micro parts, such as micro gears. 16 Current testing methods include ultrasonic technology, [17][18][19][20][21] dielectric sensing, 22,23 magnetic levitation, [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] and nanoindentation. 31,32 For example, Zhao et al first found the linear relationship between the degree of crystallinity and the ultrasound velocity.…”

“…Figure 9(b)), the ability to measure samples with large densities was achieved [83,88,89]. Moreover, our research group employed ring magnets to MagLev [90,91] ensuring better visibility, accessibility, and operability of the samples. e research by Subramanian and colleagues found that the levitation posture of a sample was correlated with the sample's shape [92].…”

“…For a ring magnet with axial uniform magnetization, we can build the physical model using Ampere molecular circulation [31,32]. The molecular currents cancel out each other inside the ring magnet and over the two end surfaces of the ring magnet, and a net current will appear on the two side surfaces of the ring magnet with the same magnitude but opposite in direction.…”
