En 2008, la Organización Mundial de la Salud lanzó el Segundo Desafío Global de la Alianza Mundial para la Seguridad del Paciente, llamado "Cirugías Seguras Salvan Vidas". Este desafío motivó la realización de este estudio con el objetivo de evaluar la adherencia de los indicadores de proceso para la prevención de infecciones del sitio quirúrgico en el período perioperatorio de pacientes sometidos a cirugías limpias en un hospital clínico brasileño. <br /><br />Método: Estudio transversal analítico, retrospectivo, realizado por médio de la revisión de 700 historiales de pacientes mayores de 18 años, sometidos a procedimientos quirúrgicos limpios, entre los años 2008 y 2010. Se utilizó un formulario estructurado según las directrices nacionales. Para el análisis de datos, se utilizó el programa SPSS v. 15 for Windows. <br /><br />Resultados: Se verificó cumplimiento en el 35,4% de los indicadores evaluados, siendo estos el tiempo de realización de la tricotomía, la profilaxis antimicrobiana previa a la cirugía, y la antisepsia del campo operatorio. Hubo 64,6% de incumplimiento, en lo relativo al tiempo de ingreso preoperatorio, método usado para tricotomía, duración de la profilaxis antimicrobiana, control térmico y glucémico en diabéticos, y registros de inspección de cajas de instrumental quirúrgico. <br /><br />Consideraciones finales: El estudio indica la necesidad de revisión del modelo de gestión y más inversión en el cumplimiento de indicadores, como parte de un sistema organizativo, en favor de una cultura de calidad y seguridad en la atención al paciente quirúrgico.<br /><br />
