Knowledge of aboveground biomass stock in Seasonal Deciduous Forests is imperative for the implementation of mechanisms to reduce emissions from deforestation, forest degradation and land reclamation. The present study analyzed the vertical distribution of aboveground biomasses in a Seasonal Deciduous Forest in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Seven 12 x 12 m plots were established, and all trees inside the plots were weighed directly in the field. Subplots of 5 x 5 m and 1 x 1 m were marked within the main plots to quantify the remaining vegetation. Average dry aboveground biomass was 316.5 Mg ha -1 , trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) greater than 10 cm accounting for over 89% of this biomass. Therefore, biomass determination of large trees deserves special attention, since they represent a large part of the biomass of this forest ecosystem. Biomass of plants taller than 1.3 m and with diameter at breast height < 5 cm was 6.9 Mg ha -1 , and that of plants lower than 1.3 m was 1.5 Mg ha -1 . Average litter mass was 15.6 Mg ha -1 . Trees of large diameters must be analyzed very carefully for quantify the biomass and carbon in the forests, because few individuals might represent a large part of the biomass of a forest ecosystem.
6 RESUMO ABSTRACTA Cordia americana (Linnaeus) Cordia americana (Linnaeus) Gottshling & J.E. Mill is used in forest restoration to recover degraded areas and riparian forest, therefore, it is important to know the quality of seedlings produced in nurseries. Thus, the present study aims to predict the Dickson quality index in Cordia americana seedlings under different arrangement conditions. The design was conducted in a protected environment in a randomized block design, in which two sizes (90 and 170 cm³) of the tube and two densities were tested, totaling four combinations. The following morphological parameters were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, leaf phytomass, stem and root, leaf area, and Dickson quality index. Plant growth was influenced significantly by the volume of the tube and density of plants throughout the evaluation period of the experiment. The container with 170 cm³ volume and 50% density was the highest IQD produced plants with best quality.
Dessa forma, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a área foliar e o índice de área foliar em mudas The leaf area is closely related to the interception of solar energy. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the area and leaf area index in Cordia americana seedlings when submitted to different growing conditions, container volumes (90 and 170 cm³), and crop density (50 and 100% tray load). The design was randomized blocks in a factorial scheme 5 x 2 x 2, with five replications and 10 plants evaluated in each sample unit. Five evaluations were performed at 20-day intervals starting 60 days after emergence. The biophysical parameters evaluated were leaf area and leaf area index. With the results, it was verified that only the tube volume influences the leaf area, being of 177.3 cm² for the tube of 170 cm³ cultivated in density of 100%. The leaf area index was influenced by the tube volume and density of plants, where the highest value was 5.76 for the tube of 90 cm³ in culture with 100% of density. The 100% density management influenced positively the growth of area and leaf area index.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Guajuvira, Manejo de plantas, Volume de recipiente.
AbstractCorrelation analysis among different variables do not always fully express the real direct effect of one variable on another, especially in forest experiments. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the correlations among direct/indirect effects of tree diameter, height, and biomass components on tree total aboveground biomass and consequences when using path analysis. We also aimed to define which of the variables should be included in biomass modeling. The tree data were collected from eight sites located in Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, where the diameter at 1.30 m aboveground (dbh), total height (h), biomass of stems, branches, leaves and tree total aboveground biomass were measured. Spearman's correlation showed that dbh (0.93), stems (0.94), and branches (0.90) had the highest association with total aboveground biomass when the direct and indirect effects of these variables were deconstructed by path analysis. The stem (0.44) and branch (0.35) components provided greater direct effects when compared with dbh (0.17). For the component stem, branches, and leaves the total aboveground biomass presented the greatest direct effects of 0.59, 0.74, and 0.36, respectively. Thus, these results indicate the convenience of including at least one biomass component in the biomass regression model, along with dbh and height.
