O desenvolvimento da área da biologia molecular, ocorrida desde a primeira metade do último século, decorre do incremento de técnicas que permitem a obtenção, manipulação e análise do ácido desoxirribonucléico (DNA) de qualquer espécie e resultara em avanços importantes para o entendimento da genética dos organismos. As diversas aplicações destas técnicas levaram a inúmeros progressos na agricultura, na saúde humana e animal, na produção de alimentos e na genética forense. Neste sentido, estes temas são de grande interesse da sociedade, e abordá-los contribui para a divulgação da ciência, o estímulo do aprendizado científico e para o desenvolvimento tecnológico. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar a estrutura e importância do DNA, os aspectos principais das técnicas empregadas na manipulação e análise do DNA e suas aplicações.
O Delta do Rio Jacuí é impactado por atividades industriais, urbanas e agrícolas. Neste contexto, o objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a presença de metais e a citogenotoxicidade da água em dois pontos do Delta do Jacuí. Amostras de água foram coletadas, em dois períodos diferentes, em dois pontos localizados na Ilha do Pavão. Os metais analisados foram alumínio, cádmio, chumbo, cobre, cromo total, manganês, níquel e zinco. A citogenotoxicidade foi avaliada em células de raízes de Allium cepa, após exposição dos bulbos às amostras de água e ao controle negativo, por 48h. Os metais detectados foram alumínio e cádmio em concentrações acima do limite e zinco em acordo com a legislação. Índice mitótico e frequência de micronúcleos nas células de cebola não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos. Foi observado aumento significativo na frequência de anormalidades cromossômicas nas cebolas expostas a uma das amostras de água. Os resultados sugerem contaminação permanente da água por alumínio, variação temporal para cádmio e variação espacial para zinco, bem como variação espaço-temporal na contaminação genotóxica da água do Delta do Jacuí na região da Ilha do Pavão.

O Jogo dos Códons representa parte do processo de síntese de proteínas (tradução), destacando o complexo formado pelo RNA transportador e aminoácido, as sequências códon (RNA mensageiro) e anticódon (RNA transportador) e o código genético. A atividade pode ser utilizada em turmas de ensino básico, técnico ou de graduação, de acordo com o tipo de abordagem e a complexidade das questões aplicadas.
A Biologia Molecular constitui importante área da Biotecnologia relacionada com variadas análises da informação genética contida nas moléculas de DNA e RNA. A disciplina de Biologia Molecular do Curso Técnico em Biotecnologia, do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Sul - Campus Porto Alegre (IFRS-POA), aborda o estudo de processos, análises e técnicas moleculares e, entre as técnicas, a extração de DNA, que também têm sido objeto de pesquisa de projetos desenvolvidos no IFRS-POA. Este artigo visa relatar estas pesquisas, que analisaram diferentes variáveis das extrações de DNA, incluindo: análise do melhor protocolo para tecidos vegetais (folhas); quantidade de tecido e volume de soluções utilizadas para extração de DNA de tecido animal (músculo bovino) e formas de conservação das amostras de tecido bovino até o momento da extração. O desenvolvimento destes projetos de pesquisa resultou em dados importantes, quanto ao rendimento e qualidade de extrações de DNA de tecidos vegetais e animais, e que poderão contribuir no apuramento de métodos subsequentes de análises moleculares.
