Objective: To investigate psychological (anxiety, depression, and stress) and salivary (flow and concentration of α-amylase) profile associated with oral lichen planus. Materials and methods:A case-control preliminary study with oral lichen planus patients and age-gender matched controls was conducted. The participants underwent psychological tests (Beck depression and anxiety inventories and perceived stress scale) and saliva collection to determine the unstimulated salivary flow and α-amylase levels at three moments along the day. The data were analyzed statistically using Mann-Whitney, McNemar chi-square and Friedman tests, and the Spearman correlation coefficient. The significance level adopted was 5%.Results: A total of 46 case-control pairs were recruited. There was a significant correlation between anxiety, depression, stress, and oral lichen planus, as well as the stress and decline of salivary α-amylase levels. Higher concentrations of this biomarker were found in the case group thirty minutes post-awakening. Conclusion:The applied psychological tests indicated that factors such as anxiety, depression, and stress were associated with oral lichen planus. Salivary analyses demonstrated a higher concentration of α-amylase thirty minutes post-awakening on individuals with the disease and its decline correlated with stress, suggesting the role of α-amylase as a promising biomarker for future studies.

Dysfunction of the stomatognathic apparatus is a disturbance of the biomechanics of the masticatory system and craniofacial structure, usually generated by tissue damage of its main components (temporomandibular, neuromuscular, and dental-occlusal system, besides in the craniocervical spine) when the morphofunctional adaptability is exceeded. Musical activity is well-known as one of the most complex activities executed by the human musculoskeletal system, as practitioners require to adopt a non-physiological posture. Therefore, by performing an integrative review of the available literature, this study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between temporomandibular disorders and the practice of wind musical instruments. We included peer-reviewed primary studies published in the last ten years, either in English, Portuguese, or Spanish, and with a full-text available. We searched four databases (PubMed, LILACS, Scielo, and Portal Capes), using a specific search strategy using the terms "wind instrument players", "oral parafunction", and "temporomandibular disorders". We excluded articles published before 2011, studies that did not correlate temporomandibular disorders with wind music practice, as well as studies without a full text. Overall, the search retrieved ten primary studies, including 3,206 amateur and professional wind instrument players. Included studies were essentially cross-sectional studies ( 8) and case-control studies ( 2). The most common signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder and deleterious oral habits among wind players were crackling and popping sounds of the temporomandibular joint, headache, should and neck pain, mouth opening limitation, and temporomandibular joint pain. Three studies identified factors that were statistically associated with the development of temporomandibular disorders (presence of temporomandibular pain, mouthpiece pressure, and higher distance of mandible protrusion). Although we have observed a high prevalence of temporomandibular diseases among musicians who play wind musical instruments, further research is required to clarify better variables and risk factors associated with developing several systemic and oral-related diseases among these individuals.

INTRODUÇÃO: Os determinantes sociais de saúde (DSS) influenciam a ocorrência de problemas de saúde e seus fatores de risco na população. Portanto, compreendem os fatores sociais, econômicos, culturais, psicológicos e comportamentais. OBJETIVO: Investigar a literatura em busca de evidências científicas internacionais e nacionais que analisaram a influência dos DSS na ocorrência da perda dentária, para elaboração de um modelo teórico proposto à essa temática. MÉTODOS E MATERIAIS: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa, em que foram selecionados artigos indexados nas bases dados do PubMed e Scielo, no período de 2012 a 2016, seguindo as recomendações metodológicas de Cooper. Os estudos que atenderam os critérios de elegibilidade foram selecionados e lidos na íntegra. Em seguida, foi realizada a análise e interpretação dos dados coletados e, por fim, uma análise teórica. RESULTADOS: Um total de 15 artigos foram selecionados e analisados, destes 12 eram estudos transversais e 3 ecológicos. A perda dentária foi associada a idade, menor nível de escolaridade, menor nível socioeconômico, gênero, menor renda familiar mensal, raça/cor preta ou parda, entre outros. Além disso, elaborou-se um modelo teórico hierarquizando os DSS entre os fatores mais gerais de natureza social, econômica, política e o grau de influência sobre o edentulismo. CONCLUSÃO: Vários estudos mostram a associação entre os DSS e a perda dentária. Desta forma, o índice de perda dentária mostra-se como um importante instrumento para a identificação de populações social e economicamente vulneráveis.
