An experimental culture trial of wild juveniles of jewfish Epinephelus itajara was conducted in two different places in the north coast of Colombia in order to evaluate the growth rate of the species and its tolerance to captivity conditions. Two different groups of fish were evaluated in each place, one fed on an artificial diet and the other on trash fish. All fish were held in floating cages for periods ranging from 63 to 89 days. Results showed excellent individual daily weight increase (6,83 and 12,4 g/day) and specific growth rate (1,4 y 0,96 %/day) for fish fed on trash fish in both places but conversion ratio was too high and inadequate (9,01 and 9,97). Trials with the artificial diet gave negative results because the fish didn’t accept the pellets satisfactorily. During the culture period the fish showed great tolerance to manipulation, disease resistance and adaptability to extreme fluctuations in water quality (O2 = 0,9-7,1 mg/L; salinity = 7-37). Sacrifice and processing of the fish indicated that in order to meet best market standards fish should be grown-up to a final weight around 1,9 kg to obtain two whole and skinned fillets of 280 g each. It is concluded that the jewfish has important advantages for its culture like a fast growth rate and a great tolerance to extreme fluctuations in water quality. Main limitations for commercial culture are the absence of technology for hatchery seed production and the lack of an artificial diet with the presentation, palatability and composition required.
An experimental culture trial of juveniles of mutton snapper Lutjanus analis was conducted in order to evaluate the growth potential of the species and its adaptability to culture conditions. The juveniles (N = 127) with an initial weight ranging between 125 and 178 g were held at a stocking density of 15.9 fish/m3 in a floating cage and fed on a commercial artificial diet of 45% protein for a period of 1 to 8 days. Results showed an individual daily weight increase of 3.16 g/ day and a specific growth rate of t .06 %/ day. Although, the food conversion ratio obtained with the artificial diet was high and inadequate (TCA = 3.53). During the culture period all fish showed great tolerance to handling stress and to water quality conditions in the cage (O2 = 6.2-7.1 mg/L; Temp = 27.9-30.5 oC; Sal = 31-37). Overall survival was 97.6%. It is concluded that the mutton snapper has very important advantages for its culture like fast growth and tolerance to captivity conditions.
Two groups of adult Mutton snapper fish Lutjanus analis captured in the wild, each one of three females and four males, were kept during eight months under controlled temperature and photoperiod conditions in the lab in order to stimulate their sexual maturation which was in a state of latency because of the effects of confinement. The first group was maintained under an artificial cycle with temperature manipulation and the second under a control cycle, in which this parameter was left at natural conditions. Every two months blood samples from all females were taken for the analysis of plasma testosterone (T) and oestradiol (E2) levels, taking ovarian biopsies simultaneously to register the mean diameter of the oocytes. After six months, a significative increase in the mean diameter of the oocytes of the three females of the artificial cycle was observed, with coincidence and statistic relationship with the increase in the T and E2 (r = 0.62 y 0.82 respectively). No oocyte growth was observed in the females under the control cycle. In both, artificial and control cycles, T and E2 levels showed a close relationship with photoperiod (r = 0.84 y r = 0.61) while temperature showed a lower or non significant relationship (r = 0.40 y r = 0.20). Statistical differences (P<0.1) were found between the condition factors of the two groups, while the sexual steroids didn’t show any differences between them. The present work constitutes the first report on the analysis of sexual steroid levels during the gonadal maturation process in fish of the Family Lutjanidae kept under an artificial conditioning cycle.
