ABSTRACT Objective:To identify the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in students of the final grade of elementary and high school in a public school in Montes Claros-MG. Methods: This is a quantitative, cross-sectional and analytical approach. The sample consisted of 337 individuals aged 11 to 17 years. We used the Suicidal Thought Scale, developed by Reynolds (1988) and adapted for the Portuguese population by Ferreira and Castela (1999). Association of the magnitude of the variables was evaluated by the adjusted and crude prevalence ratio (RP), in accordance with the Poisson model with the robust variable. Results: The prevalence of suicidal thoughts was 35.4% in the female sex and 20.1% in the male sex, being that, in this last gender, 44.9% were not practicing physical activity and 46.7% were not religious. Conclusion: We conclude the women and those men who did not practice physical activity and those who did not declare themselves religious presented higher prevalence of suicidal thoughts.
