Some cities across Europe currently experience new growth. Especially the inner-city areas are regaining their attractiveness as a residential area together with an influx of new residents and a diversification of the population structure (Herfert/Osterhage 2012; Haase/Kabisch 2010; Buzar et al. 2007). This process of urban population growth and change is oftentimes accompanied by an extension of the housing stock and the construction of new residential neighbourhoods within the existing built structure. Among these offers are new concepts for urban living that target specific demands of the residents and that potentially prevent urban sprawl and further suburbanization. The questions addressed in this article are which households relocate to these areas, what their motives are and how new urban development influences daily mobility. While it is established that compact mixed-use spatial structure rather supports low shares of motorized transport and short trip length, it is far from clear whether this is the case for new centrally located but rather low density areas. The results of a case study in Berlin suggest that this new type of urban living mostly attracts highly educated families with relatively high incomes. Residents mainly moved from other inner-city areas within Berlin to this newly developed location. The importance of some typically 'suburban' motives -a bigger apartment and a garden -for the decision to relocate indicates that new residents may have otherwise chosen to move out from the city centre. Daily mobility of residents is characterized by a rather high use of active modes such as walking and biking compared to the inner city population in general. Car use is about comparable despite a very high rate of car ownership. Overall, the study suggests that new inner city development, although with low density provides opportunities for sustainable mobility. At the same time, the potential of the area is far from being fully exploited.

The socioeconomic characteristics of early adopters of electric vehicles (EVs) differ from those of buyers of conventional vehicles, as do their attitudes towards new technologies, their mobility, and their awareness of ecological issues. They are found to have a higher average income, a higher level of education and more cars at their disposal per household. However, most of the existing studies are based on small samples, or used stated preference surveys which attempted to describe potential purchasers of EVs. Furthermore, when it comes to the kind of EV, most of the studies analyse the adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) only, with just a few looking at the adoption of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). An analysis of representative data collected from more than 3,000 owners of BEVs and PHEVs in Germany partially confirms the findings mentioned, but finds that aspects such as socioeconomic characteristics and their attitudes vary greatly among EV users.First the paper gives an overview of the socioeconomics of EV drivers in Germany, and key facts about their driving and charging behaviour. Subsequently, the main factors motivating people to buy an EV are identified and analysed for owners of BEVs and PHEVs. This is complemented by an analysis of general attitudes of EV owners towards factors such as the image of EVs, environmental awareness and mode choice. To conclude, the willingness to pay for technologies such as fast-charging, inductive charging and battery size selection is analysed.

Zusammenfassung Intermodalität – die Kombination mehrerer Verkehrsmittel im Verlauf eines Weges – findet zunehmend in der städtischen Alltagsmobilität Berücksichtigung. Insbesondere größere Städte sind mit den negativen Auswirkungen von hohen Pkw-Verkehrsaufkommen und fehlenden Parkmöglichkeiten konfrontiert. Gleichzeitig sind vielfältige öffentliche Verkehrsangebote und gute Erreichbarkeiten mit dem Fahrrad und zu Fuß vorhanden, die Alternativen zur ausschließlichen Pkw-Nutzung bieten. Intermodalität ermöglicht den Verkehrsteilnehmern eine individuelle und flexible Verkehrsmittelwahl in ihrer jeweiligen Lebens- und Alltagssituation, ohne sich auf ein Verkehrsmittel festlegen zu müssen. Andererseits setzt intermodales Verhalten einen höheren Organisationsaufwand für den Verkehrsteilnehmer voraus, Umstiege müssen in Kauf genommen werden und Kenntnisse zur Nutzung passender Mobilitätsangebote müssen vorhanden sein. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht der Beitrag die Bedeutung von Intermodalität für die Alltagsmobilität am Beispiel Berlin. Dabei wird eine quantitative Einordnung und Charakterisierung intermodaler Wege vorgenommen, um darauf aufbauend Personen mit intermodalem Mobilitätsverhalten zu identifizieren und in Abgrenzung zu unimodalen Vergleichsgruppen zu analysieren. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bisher nur ein geringer Anteil der Wege mit zwei oder mehr Verkehrsmitteln zurückgelegt wird. Im Vergleich zu unimodalen Wegen handelt es sich dabei um durchschnittlich längere und routinierte Wege (z. B. zur Arbeit). Zudem unterscheiden sich intermodale Nutzer von unimodalen Nutzern: So sind Personen, die sich auf dem Arbeitsweg intermodal verhalten, tendenziell jünger, weiblich und haben ein formal höheres Bildungsniveau. Sie verfügen über vielfältige Mobilitätsressourcen, müssen sich aber auch häufiger bei deren Nutzung mit anderen Haushaltsmitgliedern absprechen. Des Weiteren werden Unterschiede im Mobilitätsverhalten in Abhängigkeit vom Wohnort deutlich. Um intermodale Mobilitätsoptionen in der Alltagsmobilität zu erweitern und zu verbessern, müssen demnach die jeweiligen Nutzergruppen mit ihren spezifischen Anforderungen in den Blick genommen werden.
