ABSTRACTThe wastewater produced from wet coffee processing (WCP), originated from the coffee fruits, can produce great quantities of biogas, which, in turn, can be also used as an alternative or complementary energy source. In this research, we studied the variation of methane concentration produced by WCP in a laboratory-scale UASB reactor with anaerobic treatment. The samples were collected during a period of 86 days. The methane concentration was measured through gas solid chromatography (GSC). The production of biogas and methane ranged from 0.545 to 0.602 m 3 kg -1 DQO removed and from 0.382 a 0.421 m 3 kg -1 DQO removed, respectively. Methane presence in the biogas ranged from 48.60% to 68.14 %. This variation was influenced by the following parameters: temperature, pH, acidity, and phenol compounds present in the WCP. As expected, greater concentrations of methane gas were verified during the periods when the pH close to neutral.
ABSTRACTThe purpose of this work is to supply information regarding to the experimental investigation carried out in a pilot scale system, located at Coffee Study Research Center (NECAF/UFLA). The research focused mainly on a Hybrid Anaerobic Reactor (HAR) operating with mini-filters filled with two types of physical support (expanded clay and pebble "round quartz stone"). The HAR used a three-phase-separator; and during the start-up, sludge from a full-scale UASB reactor treating domestic wastewater was utilized. The experimental results did not show great efficiency due to the removal of the organic matter in other treatment units located before the HAR, minimizing in this way the concentration of organic matter to be treated in the HAR. The HAR presented an average affluent concentration of: 484, 168, and 92 mg COD tot L -1 , and an average effluent concentration of: 344, 159, and 90 mg COD tot L -1 . The HAR also presented good balance in relation to the parameters measured, as well as good stability.
The objective of this study was to carry out a survey on the sanitation services provided by the municipality, with identification of the socioeconomic profile, sanitary conditions and their interference in the life of the residents in Riachinho community, rural area of Barreiras, Bahia, Brasil. The research was carried out between September and December 2014, in 20 domiciles, in a simple random sampling. The diagnosis was performed by means of a structured questionnaire comprising family financial vulnerability, final destination of domestic effluents and solid waste, water supply, hygiene habits and health conditions of the population. The collected data were synthesized in tables, using the descriptive statistics to describe the data. It was verified that the sanitation services provided by the municipality were deficient: intermittent water supply, irregularity in the frequency of garbage collection, lack of streets' infrastructure, lack of public cleaning, lack of health facilities, domestic sewage thrown in the streets. In conclusion, sanitation services are precarious, adversely affecting the quality of life of the population and contributing to the proliferation of vectors, which aggravate the health of the residents.
