This research reports the studies, results and conclusions of a project that investigates, analyzes, describes and classifies the opinions of Colombian mathematics teachers on the teaching of mathematics by competencies (TMC). To this end, four stages are covered, referred to in the document as studies. In Study 1, an approach to the research problem is presented by means of four Focus Groups, a qualitative, lexicometric, simple correspondence and cluster analysis is carried out on the deductions and, from the results, a valid and reliable survey is prepared to investigate the opinion of Colombian mathematics teachers.Data collection is done by means of a theoretical sampling proportional to the population of each of the so-called natural regions of Colombia. The survey was administered to 704 Colombian teachers, obtaining information by means of 50 Likert scale items and by means of an open-ended question that 604 of them answered voluntarily. The analysis of the information collected leads to three subsequent studies. Study 2consists of the description of demographic data and Likert scale items (N=50). Study 3consists of contingency, multidimensional, Multiple Correspondence Factorial and classification analyses, an in-depth analysis using each question as an active variable. The open response item is analyzed in Study 4with qualitative, descriptive and lexicometric techniques and multiple correspondence, which allows the classification of the responses obtained. From the triangulation of the studies it is obtained that the opinion of Colombian teachers is generalized, there is no demographic group that stands out and on TMC it is centered on four ideas: (i) The competencies are general and independent of the contents, they are general and not specific; (ii) The content should be flexible and interdisciplinary in nature, then applied mathematics is privileged; (iii) There is confusion, doubts and difficulties for the application of the a TMC and (iv) TMC allows motivation and to attend to the interests and/or tastes of the student. In general, teachers consider that the success of the TMC is their responsibility; they believe that their role acquires additional commitments such as: using updated resources, allowing more protagonism and making the curriculum available to the students' interests and, in general, keeping them motivated. They point out that TMC is more demanding than traditional teaching (TT), requires additional resources and training, and this implies more responsibility, dedication and effort. Thus, although teachers are in favor of TMC, this does not translate into their classes, since they do not apply it because they do not know how to bring it to the classroom. This confusion would also be caused by the proponents themselves, who use a bricolage of theoretical frameworks that can become contradictory and that do not get a clear message to teachers. From the referential framework of the theory of conceptual fields TCC, it is concluded that the teachers' reiterative idea of considering generic competence apart from the content is consistent with the difficulty they express for its application and the rupture between content and competence, causing the teacher not to find how to take it to the classroom and preventing the search for and management of conceptual ruptures in favor of cognitive development and knowledge management towards the development of complex competences. It is suggested as necessary that teachers appropriate the difference between the operative part and the predicative part of knowledge from the theoretical framework of TCC, as a support to clarify the doubts and confusions that they manifest.
