Militia Companies in Veracruz. From “Black” to “Jarocho”: the Historical Construction of IdentityThroughout the colonial period, afromestizo militias in the hot land of Veracruz constituted the main defense of the viceroyalty. This article engages two aspects of these men: in the first place, it deals with changes in the perception of its members. Before the Bourbon reforms they were placed in category of “mulatto and black”; with the reforms, they were called “morenos and pardos”; during the civil war of 1810, the rebels defined them as “trigueños” and, from the indepen- dence of Mexico, the category of “jarochos” came into general use. In second place, I try to explain up to what point Bourbon reformism was able to influ- ence the habits and customs of these inhabitants, accustomed to living in lib- erty, even though their living conditions were not particularly acceptable, according to the canons of the epoch.
