El funcionalismo lingüístico es un modelo de análisis que nos permite reflexionar sobre el lenguaje en uso, partiendo de la realidad concreta del acto lingüístico y centrándose en la pragmática del discurso, ya que la verdadera significación de éste se extrae de su utilización. Analiza las interacciones entre el hablante y el oyente, cuáles son las intenciones comunicativas de los sujetos, y contextualiza la situación para establecer el verdadero significado de la frase o de la palabra. La función es el principio básico de organización lingüística del significado (Lenneberg, 1982), (Halliday, 1982). Se trata de un análisis real del discurso tal como se produce y la comparación entre las propiedades de las expresiones lingüísticas como elementos de comunicación.En el presente trabajo vamos a presentar un estudio sobre el lenguaje de niños de 3 a 10 arios desde la perspectiva funcionalista. Es decir, cómo utilizan el lenguaje, para qué, en definitiva qué funciones caracterizan el discurso de los niños de estas edades. Para ello vamos a describir en primer lugar el modelo teórico que nos sirve de base, en segundo lugar, describiremos la metodología, y por último, procedemos a comentar los datos obtenidos y exponer las conclusiones a las que hemos llegado.
