Resumen | Este artículo aborda las relaciones de las expediciones ibéricas realizadas tempranamente en el Nuevo Reino de Granada, enfatizando en aquellas escritas por Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada y los capitanes de su compaña. Aunque estos documentos han sido usados como fuente en diversos estudios históricos y antropológicos, se echa de menos un balance de la cuestión a la luz de nuevas preguntas que dialoguen con la historiografía americanista más reciente. Sin pretender ser exhaustivo, este artículo busca contribuir a ese propósito. Para ello emplea análisis textual de fuentes primarias publicadas y bibliografía secundaria. La génesis de las relaciones estuvo condicionada por la demanda de información desde el centro imperial, los intereses de los conquistadores, así como la mediación de los cronistas y cosmógrafos oficiales, en particular Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo, quien los recopiló y utilizó en la segunda parte de su Historia general y natural de las Indias. En ese corpus documental se encuentran prefigurados varios tópicos discursivos que reaparecieron de forma ampliada en las crónicas locales desde finales del siglo XVI, como la abundancia y buen temple del Nuevo Reino, Jiménez de Quesada como su legítimo conquistador y los muiscas como un pueblo pacífico, populoso y aprovechable económicamente. New Readings on the Earliest Relaciones of the New Kingdom of Granada (1539-1550): Authors, Debates and Central ThemesAbstract | This article deals with the relaciones from the earliest Iberian expeditions to the New Kingdom of Granada, with an special emphasis on those written by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada and the captains of his troop. Although these documents have been used as sources in various historical and anthropological studies, a balanced approach to this matter, in the light of a new set of questions that dialogue with the most recent historiography of the Hispanic and Latin-American world, is still required. Without being exhaustive, this article aims to contribute to that purpose by using textual analysis of published primary sources and secondary bibliography. Reflexionamos en torno a las representaciones y prácticas relativas a las piedras preciosas durante las primeras dos décadas y media de expansión castellana en América, a la luz de las fuentes impresas del periodo, especialmente De Orbe Novo Decades de Pedro Mártir de Anglería. A diferencia del oro y las perlas, hasta la década de 1530 no fueron halladas cantidades significativas de piedras preciosas y la información sobre estos elementos se mantuvo, principalmente, en el ámbito de la expectativa. La exploración de Tierra Firme reveló indicios de mayores cantidades de gemas en el interior de Suramérica, pero la mayoría de conquistadores aparentemente no les dieron una particular importancia en la etapa estudiada, a diferencia del rey, sus oficiales y cronistas.
