Numerous studies have supported a role for oxidative stress in the development of ischemic damage and endothelial dysfunction. Crataegus oxyacantha (Co) and Rosmarinus officinalis (Ro) extracts are polyphenolic-rich compounds that have proven to be efficient in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. We studied the effect of extracts from Co and Ro on the myocardial damage associated with the oxidative status and to the production of different vasoactive agents. Rats were assigned to the following groups: (a) sham; (b) vehicle-treated myocardial infarction (MI) (MI-V); (c) Ro extract-treated myocardial infarction (MI-Ro); (d) Co extract-treated myocardial infarction (MI-Co); or (e) Ro+Co-treated myocardial infarction (MI-Ro+Co). Ro and Co treatments increased total antioxidant capacity, the expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD)-Cu2+/Zn2+, SOD-Mn2+, and catalase, with the subsequent decline of malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine levels. The extracts diminished vasoconstrictor peptide levels (angiotensin II and endothelin-1), increased vasodilators agents (angiotensin 1–7 and bradikinin) and improved nitric oxide metabolism. Polyphenol treatment restored the left intraventricular pressure and cardiac mechanical work. We conclude that Ro and Co treatment attenuate morphological and functional ischemic-related changes by both an oxidant load reduction and improvement of the balance between vasoconstrictors and vasodilators.
Pain is a major symptom in many dental procedures. Studies show consistently that pain, including dental pain, is not effectively treated; management of pain is a critical and challenging component in dentistry. Improvement and efficacy on the treatment depends on knowing which treatments are the most effective. Knowing how well an analgesic works and its associated adverse effects is fundamental to clinical decision. The aim of this review is to provide information to the dentistry field on the treatment of dental pain specifically with COX-2 inhibitors providing a useful guide to dentist on controlling pain. Therefore, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most commonly prescribed analgesic agents in surgical outpatients. Major limitations of NSAIDs are their gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events (perforation, ulceration, and bleeding), impairment of hemostatic function, and renal failure (with long-term therapy). A new class of NSAIDs, COX-2 selective inhibitors (Coxibs), have been developed with the aim of reducing the GI adverse events of traditional NSAIDs while maintaining their effective anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
Introducción: La pandemia por COVID-19 ha evidenciado la importancia de la metodología epidemiológica, por lo que es significativo fortalecer su aprendizaje en todos los niveles formativos del área de ciencias de la salud. Objetivo: Aplicar metodología epidemiológica de carácter descriptivo y analítico para el estudio de una base de datos de casos COVID-19 en la República Mexicana. Material y métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda de bases de datos en sitios web oficiales sobre los casos de COVID-19, y se recuperó un archivo en formato Excel con la información de 65,536 casos al día 10 de abril del 2021 a las 01:14hrs. Posteriormente, se realizó análisis estadístico de las diferentes variables mediante el programa SPSS, versión 21 en español, consistente en cálculo de prevalencias, razón de productos cruzados (RPC) y medidas de asociación, en lo cual participaron alumnos del cuarto semestre de enfermería. Resultados: La prevalencia para el género masculino fue de 53 %, y para el femenino de 47 %, con una media aritmética de edad de 35 años. La Chi cuadrada entre género y resultado de laboratorio positivo fue de 6527.9, con un 99 % de probabilidad de que haya asociación entre las variables. Asimismo, para la relación hipertensión y resultado de laboratorio positivo la Chi cuadrada fue de 51.97. La RPC para diabetes y resultado de laboratorio positivo fue de 1.4. Conclusiones: La aplicación de indicadores epidemiológicos básicos representa una herramienta importante para el fenómeno epidemiológico COVID-19, pues establece una caracterización de la epidemia en nuestro país.
Preeclampsia (PEC) is the cause of fetal and maternal death. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) found in macrophages, smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells. The main objective was to detect the fluorescence iNOS in placenta. Cotyledons cuts were made, they were placed in 10% formalin. And on the slides washed with buffer solution, oxygenated water with methanol, using 10% pig serum, anti iNOS Rabbit pAb solution, streptavidin-fluorescein. Microscope Carl Zeiss and Image-Pro 7.0 software was used. Placentas of pregnant women with PEC without pathology were analyzed. Increased uptake of fluorescein in erythrocytes of women without PEC was found, patients who developed PEC was remarkable decreased uptake of fluorescein. Decreasing iNOS activity is evident in preeclampsia.
