La diálisis peritoneal (DP) es un tratamiento utilizado en pacientes con insuficiencia renal, consiste en la depuración de sustancias nocivas, de las inocuas y no solo eso, sino que también permite eliminar el exceso de electrolitos en el organismo, gracias a que utiliza el revestimiento del abdomen denominado "membrana peritoneal" como filtro. Se realizó un artículo de revisión de 21 trabajos bibliográficos, de los cuales se extrajo la información esencial. Se muestran antecedentes de la diálisis peritoneal, implementos como el catéter y la solución dializante, tipos de tratamiento de DP: Diálisis Peritoneal Continua Ambulatoria (DPCA) y Diálisis Peritoneal Automática (DPA): Diálisis Peritoneal Automática adaptada (DPAa), Diálisis Peritoneal Tidal (DPT), Diálisis Peritoneal Continua Cíclica (DPCC), Diálisis Peritoneal Nocturna Intermitente (DPNI) y Diálisis Peritoneal Intermitente (DPI). Por último, se mencionan las complicaciones más usuales que pueden ocurrir por el tratamiento de DP, como la peritonitis o la infección del orificio de salida y túnel subcutáneo.
