PurposeThis paper aims to probe into the implementation of internship courses under the five-year cosmetology program in Taiwan from the perspective of Dewey's philosophies in hopes that the analysis can serve as reference for schools in planning their internship courses in the future.Design/methodology/approachThis paper probes into the off-campus internship courses under Taiwan's five-year junior college education program by applying Dewey's empirical philosophy.FindingsThe study aims to understand the learning experience acquired by students from learning by doing internship courses as reference for future internship design. The current internship courses comprise the follows: summer, during the semester and for a full academic year. The experience of summer internship is career exploration, the experience for semester internship is career experience and the experience from academic-year internship is career choice. The internship strategies are designed according to the three different internship approaches, so that the internship courses can implement the educational effect of “learning from experience”.Practical implicationsTo minimize the discrepancy between the cosmetology program under the five-year junior college education and the employment market, credit-based off-campus internship courses are arranged for students' final years at school.Social implicationsThrough on-site trainings, students accumulate work experience and explore into a related career field. The accumulation of experience and gaining of insights mirror the philosophy of learning by doing, which involves students' reflective thinking.Originality/valueIt is hoped that the analysis can serve as reference for internship courses planning in the future.
This research aims to analyze the Curriculum planning and benefit between departments of beautification in college and the professional courses by using ISM. To understand the link between different professional courses of beautification in college and find out the connections, Department of Cosmetic Science will be taken as an example. The result will benefit to future developing plans of the courses in Department of Cosmetic Science. The object of this research is all Department of Cosmetic Science in college in Taiwan. All professional courses related with Department of Cosmetic Science were discussed. The content and hierarchy of courses were analyzed and summarized by using ISM. By clarifying the suitability of them as well as promoting Department of Cosmetics Science's future development, all three parties, including the courses, lecturers and students, can achieve the best effect from this research. Keywords: interpretive structural model; ISM model; course; five-year junior colleges; department of cosmetic applications and management Research Background and Purpose Research BackgroundThe fast propagation of popular information and the constantly new release of services in cosmetology and hair salon industries have impelled the "beauty economies" industries to thrive. Taiwan's economic development eventually shifts to "industry planned economy" based services, where hair salon and cosmetology industries account for the majority in "unclassified other service category," including hair salon, cosmetology and beauty as well as other category. Industries involving hair salon, cosmetology and skin care, cosmetics, manicure, and body sculpturing without involving medical procedures are operated in forms of individual workshops and large chain stores of patented commercial brands (DGBAS, 2011). Moreover, the thriving development of cosmetics market and cosmetology and anti-aging market also draws increasing demand for professionals in cosmetics application management, fashion styling, and cosmetology and hair salon (Wei, Jiayi, 2010). DGBAS (2012) suggested that the number of employed in service industries has accounted for 54.74% of the total employment population since 2010, showing a 2.16% increasing trend annually, suggesting that the demand for cosmetology and hair salon related industries have increased in the economy market over the years.Relevant studies also reveal that the average women aged between 18-45 in recent years spend at least over NTD5000 on styling and makeup each year while the annual market scale for cosmetology and hair salon have at least exceeded NTD1.5 billion with at least 70,000 to 80,000 people working in related work each year (Public
The study objects comprise of vocational and technical schools in Taiwan and conducts group analysis on internship institutions, school teachers and students through qualitative research and quantitative research. The internship content reveals greatest difference for students' performance in workplace etiquettes p< .001 while student's workplace performance p < .01: Workplace skills, interpersonal communication and work attitude. Students' workplace performance p < .05: adaptability issue, internship welfare, minor discretion in the presentation of internship agreement. With regards to learning factor analysis: The CR value is 0.913 and AVE value is 0.677 for interpersonal interaction and attitude learning, the CR value is 0.845 and AVE value is 0.577 for welfare regulations and career, and the CR value is 0.715 and AVE value is 0.457 environmental cognition and adaptability. A CR value greater than 0.7, suggests excellent internal consistency in the research model while AVE value also meets the standards.
The paper aims to analyze the competence model for vocational college students taking internship in hairdressing industry based on the viewpoints of learning by doing, based on the discourses from Dewey’s experience theory and to understand the correlation and hierarchy of the context of competence for the professional skills of hairdressing industry, thereby to facilitate the design and development of human resources for the hairdressing industry. The study analyzes the off-campus interns for junior college cosmetology andhairdressing related departments in Taiwan. The study also emphasizes on school teachers, hairdressing personnel and hairdressing industry interns through conducting qualitative research document analysis, and quantitative research ISM system. The analysis of context and correlation of competence skills for hairdressing industry can be adopted as the standard of occupational information for designing hairdressing competence and learning map by schools and vocational institutes. Secondly, the study will link hairdressing personnel development with hairdressing industry demand to create win-win situations for school course instrument, industry education training and employment of industry personnel.
