O presente artigo volta-se para o estudo da poesia de Conceição Evaristo em Poemas da recordação e outros movimentos (2017). Objetiva-se ler tal obra a partir da categoria “esperança”, conforme tal categoria é pensada por Paulo Freire em Pedagogia da Esperança (2000). No cômputo geral, a esperança aparece na lírica de Conceição Evaristo revestida de um viés político que visa à transformação das estruturas hegemônicas de poder que têm perpetuado injustiças sociais, discriminações e violências e, consequentemente, à construção de um futuro de liberdade e igualdade que passa necessariamente pelo esperançar freireano.
A partir da análise de alguns poemas produzidos por mulheres do século XIX, o artigo propõe-se a refletir acerca da poesia brasileira de autoria feminina no Brasil, evidenciando não só os temas de que trataram algumas poetisas, em especial, Gilka Machado, Pórcia C. Melo, Francisca Júlia, Narcisa Amália, Júlia Cortines, Maria Amélia Queiroz, mas, sobretudo, como elas dialogaram ou colidiram com os preceitos das estéticas literárias oitocentistas.
