AimsThis study aims to investigate the beneficial effects of practising mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) to general health of patients with terminal cancer.
The N95 respirator is one type that is recommended by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent inhalation of droplets that may act to transmit respiratory pathogens. However, the reliability of this respirator to prevent transmission is dependent on how well it is fitted to the wearer. For ill-fitting respirators, the average penetration by ambient aerosol was found to be 33%, compared with 4% for well-fitting respirators. Such penetration or leakage may be caused by the gap between the respirator and the wearer's face. Therefore, formal fit testing should be carried out prior to the use of N95 respirators. Quantitative fit testing measures “the adequacy of respirator fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage into the respirator” using an electronic device.
The utility of a nursing model as a framework to understand and explain a health phenomenon is fundamental to guide nursing practice. In this article, the authors aim to provide an examination of the Roy adaptation model as a basis for the development of an instrument used for assessing the health needs of pregnant women. With the congruence between the concepts in the Roy adaptation model and antenatal practice, an antenatal assessment instrument is developed. The assessment areas focus on pregnant women's behaviors in the four adaptation modes. The current experience is valuable for nurses who are involved in instrument development and midwifery practice.
Attempts to meet the increasing demand for long-term care (LTC) services have been hindered by acute staff shortages and high turnover. Distinct from previous studies, a descriptive phenomenological approach with van Kaam's controlled explication method was adopted in this study, to delineate how attributes of the LTC work environment shape the workforce crisis. Individual interviews were conducted with 40 LTC workers from 10 facilities in Hong Kong. The results suggest that the work environment in LTC facilities is not only characterized by organization- and job-related attributes that influence staff outcomes but also is a socially constructed concept with derogatory connotations that can influence staff recruitment and retention. Concerted efforts from facility administrators and policy makers are needed to improve the quality of the work environment. Future initiatives should focus on developing a vision and strategic plan to facilitate the rise of the LTC sector as a profession.
