Reaction of Li/Cl phosphinidenoid complexes 2a,b with diphenyl thioketone or N,N′-tetramethylthiourea yielded the bicyclic 1,2-thiaphospholane complex 4b or alkylidene(thioxo)phosphane complex 6a, respectively. DFT studies provide insight into the reaction pathways, pointing to the initial thiocarbonyl−phosphane−ylide complex 3, which can form the bicyclic 1,2-thiaphospholane complex 4. However, cyclization to give thiaphosphirane complex 5 also appears to be feasible, which via subsequent combined C−S bond cleavage and P-to-S haptotropic metal complex shift yields complex 6.The chemistry of transition-metal complexes possessing ligands with a 1,2-dipole bonding motif such as in Wittig ylides I 1 and inversely polarized phosphaalkenes II 2 (Chart 1) is well established, but only a few 1,3-dipole ligands are known, e.g. complexes III 3 and IV; 4 all led to new coordination chemistry. Some reports have claimed the intermediacy of complexes V 5 with 1,3-dipole ligand structures as reactive intermediates, 6 but only very recently was the first stable complex derivative of type VI 7 unambiguously established.Experimental Results. When Li/Cl phosphinidenoid complexes 2a 8a and 2b, 8b prepared from complexes 1a 9 and 1b, 8b reacted in situ with diphenyl thioketone (Scheme 1), a major product (3a; ∼90% according to 31 P NMR integration) was selectively formed, possessing a 31 P{ 1 H} NMR resonance at low field (370.9 ppm, 1 J WP = 43.5 Hz), but this could not be isolated. On the other hand, a clean reaction of complex 2b provided the bicyclic 1,2-thiaphospholane complex 4b. 10
Readily available P-tBu substituted Li/Cl phosphinidenoid complexes react with carbonyl compounds to furnish sterically almost unhindered oxaphosphirane complexes that reveal new and surprisingly facile intra- and intermolecular ring expansion reactions. 1,3,2-Dioxaphosphole complex formation is explained by DFT calculations through diastereoselective carbonyl group-induced ring cleavage of an oxaphosphirane intermediate.
Facile stereo-and regioselective ring opening of the oxaphosphirane complex A is presented using small molecules with differently polar E−H bonds (HCl, H 2 O, and NH 3 ). The synthetic potential of the thus obtained novel 1,2-bifunctional ligands B is illustrated in cyclocondensation reactions, leading to the novel heterocyclic Pligands C.
Two different ionic deconstruction reactions of the oxaphosphirane ring in I are reported. One is induced by base and involves displacement of the aldehyde unit forming II whilst acid-initiated extrusion of the ring-carbon with its substituents yielded III. Further insights into the latter ring-deconstruction were obtained by quantum chemical calculations.
