ResumoThe meteorological data used in the study was supplied by Klabin S.A., a major Brazilian forest company. Data on forest fire occurrences were collected from June 1998 to May 2003, totalizing 5 years of observation. The main objective of is research was to compare the performance of Monte Alegre Formula (FMA) and Modified Monte Alegre Formula (FMA + ) in the fire danger prediction in the Monte Alegre Forest District. The performance of the indices were evaluated through the skill score method, based on a contingency table composed by the observed and the predict values for an event in a determined period of time. Null and Low fire danger classes were considered as indicative of no fire occurrence, whereas Medium, High, and Very High classes were considered as indicative of fire occurrence. Based on these premises the skill score and the success percentages of the indices were calculated. Results indicated a lower performance of the FMA compared to the FMA + in the analyzed period.
) for the state of Parana, based on the performance analysis of this index using the skill score method. The results showed that three different danger scales should be used in the State. The original danger class scale is to be used in the central state area, represented by the Cândido de Abreu, Cascavel, Guarapuava and Telêmaco Borba regions. A second danger class scale is to be used in the northern area, represented by the Cambará and Paranavaí regions and a third scale validated by the Campo Mourão, Londrina, Palmas and Pinhais regions, should be used in the remaining State areas.
ABSTRACTThis research was developed in the Irati National Forest, located predominantly in the county of Fernandes Pinheiro, Paraná State, Brazil, using daily rainfall data from 1963 to 2006. The objective of the study was to examine the precipitation behavior, an important variable in fire occurrence, to use the information in further work on forest fire prevention and control. It was analyzed the monthly precipitation, the number of days with rain, and average daily precipitation, in terms of means, minimum and maximum values. Afterwards, the data were grouped and an analysis of the precipitation evolution for that period was carried out. It was determined and analyzed the inter annual variability of dry and rainy seasons considering the 44 years.
